US government can search the contents of your laptop

Stupid policy.

It's easy to get data past borders. Anyone can just email themselves the illegal material. So all this does is increase delays, increase paranoia and further reduce personal freedoms.

They don't want you to think that there's anywhere you can hide things from the government!

You cant exactly e-mail large stuff. You can encrypt any section you want concealed and you are not required to cough up the key.

Exactly verite... The important thing is to be aware of what they can do, and make sure the pgp or whatever file vaults you use are in place...

It would be a shame for someone to go through with ICmag bookmarked and their password saved, or seedbay, or any similar scenario...

how far can they go with the laptop? If you use windows and use a login, can they get their tech and hack the machine? I know the windows log-in is not bullet proof, but your average $9HR security guard wont know how to hack it. I am just wondering how long can they hold you and how much effort can they put into accessing the files?

And yes there are millions of ways to get data into the country. Gotomypc, yousendit.com, VPN's, mail a CD, etc.

Thats why you should also leave tons of porn on the desktop. By the time they get done transferring it from your system they dont have time to search anything else and have to let you go.

This is why you should transport all "illegal" activities on an encrypted device, e.g. 2GB keychain USB. leave the laptop at home

Leaving the laptop at home is not always an option. Laptops are intended to be portable. When I travel always take my laptop, and I always make sure it is secure.
This thread really should be less about "data smuggling", and more about simply reminding everyone to encrypt their files and clear their browser trails.

I was just saying that there are so many obvious ways of circumventing this that it's ineffective as a method of catching "criminals". Therefore why do it? Is it just another method of removing privacy and proving that there's nowhere that the government can't look?
