Thanks Bongo & Jack. That could be right about the mag excess w/ a high ph. The mag. prefers a higher ph though. I am gonna try to lower it for a few feedings.

Looking at coco distributors today, it will cost about $7000 to get a container of coco delivered to the states from India =]

pressed and dry or lose coco? treated or untreated? packing? have fun dude, make sure you talk to them about the initial salt content, which you want cleaned out. :biglaugh:

a good wholesale friend is still sitting on more then half a container from Sri lanka, lol. that shit is right off the coco mountain lol. some of it has an ok salt level, but some of it is through the roof. no one is buying it, cause he has much better quality for now.

Pelemix distributes for American Agritech (Botanicare). I don't believe Pele does the steaming of the coco to get the salts out.

One thing that I haven't seen is a US distributor of their coco growcubes. Coco is awesome for starting seeds, but nobody sells any products to do so.

*ninja edit*

GH makes cocotek cubes for dripping that could possibly be used for starting seeds?

*ninja edit #2*

I just found Jumpstart pellets for starting seeds in coco. Looks like the consumer market beat me to it. DOH! [/Homer]

Sup guys
I/S was the coco cheaper then the shipping?:)

jack- I saw the cocotek cubes the other day, and there are way too coarse and they have glue caked all over them. The hydroshop guy said that have to dripped on constantly or they will wilt. But he says alot of stuff so I don't know if that's true.
they also have coco a/b cubes which look better(only saw these on the internet)
but they have a course outside coco with coir in the middle. They might be too big to start seeds quick. :)

has anyone used the sunleaves cubes?

We have not figured out what grade of texture we want yet, there are a lot believe it or not... as far as EC levels and salt content, most distributors we have been looking at provide this info either on their site or just ask through an email. We basically have been focusing on companies that only provide detailed salt level information and truly understand the need for low salt levels. Your friend has the right idea, we plan in the near future to become distributors/wholesalers of coco coir and try and get other plant nurseries to make the big switch =]

When I go to the office I will grab the fax and let ya know what the real numbers are, just in case anyone else is interested in becoming their own coco distributors =] I looked at the paper again today... I lied, it is about 7 grand for shipping from sri lanka and an addition 6 grand for the coco, lol... that is for 50 tons of coco goodness though :woohoo:

shipping can be negotiated also.... if you arrange for your own shipping you can prob cut the cost in half to 1/4th...

It's weird you say that! My hydro shop guy ordered some just for customers to try out by uber coincedence. I confirmed today they look like ass and are probably not usable.

The sunleaves coco is nice and chunky, but have periodically had high salt content. I shopped around, and when I tried the sunleaves blocks, I flushed them thoroughly and had no problems.

I am in desperate need of everyone's help on this one..

If you could provide any tips or information regarding international shipping, please PM me! Any comments, suggestions, phone numbers, links... anything! Please contact me!

I just read an article about coconut coir in the recent Greenhouse Growers magazine for the first time in my life. It is only a matter of time before the rest of the people figure out the benefits of coconut coir in the horticultural industry. When they do figure this out, I want to be the one they come to for the coco! If they don't know about coir, I want to be the one explaining how much better it is than the shitty peat and horse shit mixes they use around here. It is only a matter of time before my window of opportunity closes, and I do not feel like getting shut out! :badday:

the following link is just an example.. you will have to do a few days of googling and allibaba searching and a few more days of phone calls to find the cheapest rates

http://www.slffa.com/
http://www.freightnet.com/country/c131-Sri Lanka
http://www.shipmycontainer.com/

just make sure that the company you are buying your container of coco from allows customer arranged shipping... I have found that a few will insist on you having them ship it as the shipping is a business for them too

You will have to pay to have the container taken to the shipping yard and dropped you will have to pay customes in and out of the contries involved also but this is generally not to bad... it is the storage fees you accumulate while waiting for customes to isnspect that are a pain in the ass...

Also you can save some $$ and time getting it into this country by having its destination be a free trade zone in teh US there are several around the country and you dont have to pay some of the customes fees and the goods dont get held at the port they are allowed to be trucked inland before inspections... harbor storage is at a premium

Ive been googling and calling people for the couple days, a few more won't do any harm =] I appreciate all the information Ono, I really do! The cheapest rate I have found so far was from India to my local port for $4700.. not bad, but still looking =]

Luckily I won't have to deal with that nonsense with the port I am going through :woohoo:

hey i thought this might be fun to imagine:

"After coconuts are harvested, the fibrous husk is removed from the coconut “seed”. An interesting fact about coconut harvesting from the Royal Botanical Gardens, KEW website: “…in some coconut-growing areas in Indonesia and Thailand the pig-tailed macaque monkey (Pithecus memestrinus) has been trained to climb the trees to collect the nuts. The monkeys are well-treated and prized for their skill….” "

anyone else that wants a coco-monkey? :D

peace all
