Is there any reason people can think of that the coir itself wouldn't be ok also?

nope. i kept some coco outside in the bags during cold times and it worked fine, just flush and prepare it properly when your finally going for it!

Hey, i'm a little OT here but i have a coco related problem (kind of)

My nutes showed up today via UPS and they are frozen solid! I have Canna coco a+b, rhizotonic, pk 13/14 and cannazym. Are they ruined? The containers are very specific about keeping them in a frost free environment, so I am guessing the whole order is toast, ugh. Also I had 2 bags of canna coco in there as well, they are quite cold and solid, are they ok? This is a bit of a nightmare, as for a shipping claim I will have to tell UPS what was in the boxes and I really don't feel like advertising. The company I bought from is contacting Canna for me right away and hopefully I either get the green light or replacements. Thanks for any info you guys have in advance,

Sn

oh shit, frozen solid nutrients are not a good idea at all. the canna coco a+b is not totally mineral. there are many gelate based nutrients included. i have never actually tried to use A+B that had been frozen, but i should think it will have been spoiled. best thing is to ask canna what they think. the one thing i can tell you with certainty, is that the coco coir will be ok, no matter if it got frozen. the coir its self is very resilient.

by the way, next time i would go out and buy the nutes you need with cash. even if you have to take a trip to another town to do so.

50F? I wish, I'd be outside in my flip flops with the kids on the slip and slide! This morning with the wind, it was -28 to -30 Celcius and winter hasn't even really started yet, after christmas we usually get at least a one month patch where it's -30 Celcius during the day with the sun up, before the wind is even factored in. I tried to put an HPS in my igloo last year, but it melted everything and all my huskies got wet. <---- Canadian humor, eh?

Anyways, I heard back from Canna, both Canna USA and Canna Canada and aparently they test their nutes for freezing right down to -30 Celcius and there are no problems with the soultions thawing out, just make sure you shake vigourously before using. Apparently they are much more susceptible to extreme heat than extreme cold. So it looks like I am in the clear which is great because I am a small time peronsal grower who works 60+ hrs a week just to pay his bills and support his family, if I had to write off all my nutrients it would have been 3-4 months before I could replace them and continue growing. I have to commend Canna on their nute bottles, mine were stretched right out after being frozen solid, I think a lesser container would have popped it's seams and made one hell of a mess.

Anyways, as a parting shot, Here's some of my babies chilling out and waiting to be fed, I can't wait until I have gals like these in Coco, I'm tired of trying to manage my dirt!

that's great news SuperNuck.

all the best for your switch to coco growing. will you go the handwatering way? or the automated watering way?

I will be going with hand watering. I am in a 3.5 x 3.5 foot space for flower, growing a perpetual style garden. I won't ever really have more than 14 or so plants in flower at once and they will be in 3-4 different groups age wise, hand watering is the only way to go for this IMO as I like to give each plant as much TLC as I can.

I was wondering, if you are supposed to always keep your coco fairly wet, how well does the root mass come free of your pots when you are transplanting? I hate trying to get a really wet rootball out of a pot when using dirt, they have always stuck like glue for me. Is coco different? I'll be cutting my coco with some perlite and hydroton, with hydroton in the bottom of my pots. Thanks guys, I am very excited to begin working with the coir, It will be about mid decmeber though before I can start any new plants as I have to wait for my flowering cabinet to clear out a little first.

Time to up the nutes?

Time to up the nutes?

Heres a quick look at my special skunk seedlings. They look a bit hungry and are yellowing at the bottom which is down to my nutes I think. I've only been giving them 550ppm (0.8) EC. They look like they want more so I tried 2 plants at 1.2 EC to see if they respond well to that before upping the nutes for the rest of them.

The grapefruits are a bit taller, 2 of them are pretty much fucked as you can see middle left, they looked rather weak when going in and I'll probably just pull them out over the weekend as they don't seem to be improving.

I'll get a batch of 1.2 made up Gaius, cheers mate. The grapefruits are in day 4 of 12/12, I have about another 4-5' of head room so I'm thinking of topping them as I hear they get quite tall.

i never top plants once i started 12/12. unles i'm sure about the need. maybe only the plants that are right under the lamps? i did that with my SDv3 that was right under the lamp and it came out real well. it was also visibly taller then the rest. it was also in the first days of 12/12. i suppose it all depends on how long the flowering time is, right?

hope to see you again in april man?

peace out

I'll let em go natually and see how they do, I can tie them back it they get unweildy as I did that with a few of MODs menage a trois and they are doing really well.

As for April, I'll make it this time if it kills me. I've had my hands full with the new kid and the missus is 5 months pregnant again ( I dont waste any time :) ) she's due the end march beginning of april, so that gives me almost 3 weeks to get her out of hospital and settled in with the new baby. She knows I want to go though so I'll probably have the in-laws up staying while Im away to give her a hand. As long as they're gone when I get back.. lol

Coco is good.

Coco is good.

My first flower using coco,(have mums in coco for 6mnths now), a very simple and forgiving medium to use. My jury is still out on overall yield and calibre of herb. That's just because this grow ain't over yet.LOL. :sasmokin:

Stay Safe. Peace.

PS. Great thread. :yummy:

Hey guys, I'm doing another flush today and I was wondering if coco follows the twice the container size for flush rule and do I have to correct the PH of the water used to flush. I hope not that's like 100 gallons of water lugging to do today!!

I would definitely do the twice the container size flush of ph'ed water ... make sure ph your water to help avoid ph drift and nutrient lockout. Yea flushing is a pain in the ass ... but it must be done.
