Umm..Am I Even Germinating Right?

I Used To Grow

On Monday the 19th I put 4 Sour Saver seeds and 1 bag seed into two wet paper towels and placed them in a sandwich bag with a little water so they would stay wet. On Wednesday I checked them and all 5 had cracked and were showing the white taproot. I checked them again Thursday and the taproot didn't seem to be getting any longer. Now, am I just impatient or is there something wrong and the taproot should be getting longer every day?

The past few tries I've got the seed to crack but when I put them in soil they won't grow..what gives? Did I do something wrong or am I just impatient?

I used to just put the seed in the soil and let it germinate that way but I thought that the paper towel method would work better so that's how I've been doing it lately. Also, is it okay to use a sandwich bag to put the wet paper towels in and add a little water to keep it moist or is that overdoing it?

sounds like ya did the papertowel method correct...
you neeeeeed to get those seeds in dirt though!!!!! typically you would just "crack" the seed in the papertowel and carefully transfer rite away..cuz leaving exposed tap root in papertowel can kill the seeds. you can pick up germs and fungus' from the water/moisture the longer they go in them. also always handle the cracked seed very careful cuz your fingers carry many chmicals on them too that can kill your seeds. try to handlewith tweezers

Sounds like you mighta let 'em die. There's nothing wrong with starting in soil - I've been growing for over 10 years and I still do it that way.

I use the papertowell method most times...and once they crack I usually put them into dirt right away. Sometimes I forget and they grow outta the shell but they seem to grow fine too. Sometimes if the baggie gets to wet they will turn to moosh.

lately ive been just popping like 20 seeds in a cup of water until they crack...

how do you place the seed into the soil?

In the link above the first thing mentioned...RO or distilled water...me thinks the water is doing it!!! I use this method all the time and never ever have a problem..I dont use the plastic baggie instead I use two small plates. put on a heating mat set at 80-85 degrees. Depending on the room temp. Everything must be totally clean. Germs/bateria will kill the seed. Clean hands, clean new towel, clean plates and germ free water is the way to go..or just put them in the soil and pray!!! Good Luck!! If those Sour Savers turn out anything like Zep's Gumball's your in for a treat!!!..peace

Hi all
Temps are very important for germing/cloneing
There are only 2-3 months where there would be ambient temps at the right heat for germing where i live(That is a guess not exact)*SMiles*
So the rest of the time i have to indruduce heat along the way

To me temps are more important than having clean hands and the like(just my take on things tho)

Good luck m8

Germs on your hands? You people smoke entirely too much weed. A little common sense people...seeds were created to go into dirt...dirt is dirty.

Iusedtogrow...you did the method correctly, but you really should've transplanted after seeing the taproot. You should be ok if they are still alive. Just do the transplant asap.

Thanks for all the advice people, I appreciate it. ICmag is really gonna help out on this grow since I forgot some stuff since it's been over 2 years.

Alright..seeing as how this is my first grow in 2 years I've lost a little know how when it comes to the germinating..not much, but I should've known to transplant them asap after seeing the root.

So, after getting the sink all dirty preparing the containers for the transplant I finally have them sitting in a warm place in my bedroom where they should shed their shells in a few days. I accidentally lost one Sour Saver seed in one cup of soil...so I put another one in it..so maybe two will pop up out of that one and I can transplant one into another container. I hope this works out seeing as how I'm going to buying a floro light soon to place in my not so stealth grow cab. My grow cab consists of a blanket thrown over a small two sided table with little head room for the plants to grow..after I feel safe I'll put the plants into my closet where there is like 6 feet of vertical grow space. Wish I still had my little 100w HPS for flowering...after some trouble a couple years ago it got thrown in the dumpster along with hundreds of $$$ worth of seeds from Seedsdirect...jeez, I had so many different strains from some Kush's to some Skunks and some Sweet Tooth and Free Tibet..and some strain with a Buddha in it's name.

you should follow your own advise and not comment on stuff you know nothing about......

#1 everyone has corrosive oils/acids on their hands. (do the research)
#2 germing in papertowels and letting the water/towels stagnate..creates a
breading ground for germs/bacteria (do the research)

these 2 situations may not be harmful in most cases..but when applied to "seedlings" their deadly

Well, it's been 4 days and none of the Sour Savers have popped up and sprouted their first leaves.

Did I kill them by leaving them in the wet paper towels for too long?

Man, maybe I'll just wait till fall to grow some since I can't seem to germinate anything right..dammit! I lost my growing skills after a 2 year absence.

After little consideration, I planted 4 Sour Thai seeds right in the soil instead of using the paper towel method. The soil is very moist in each of the 4 conatainers and the Sour Thai should sprout within a few days to a week or two.

I really need to get this grow going cuz all I can afford is like an 8th to a quarter a month and that blows... I need more weed to smoke!

Well, I don't have a light yet, but maybe I should buy one tomorrow..I think the Sour Thai will germ with no problem.

Haha, if I play them some Tom Petty they'll be dancing all around and getting down!

Yeah screw leaving them on paper towels after they crack..if they crack at all that's good enough to sow um..crater up
(the pit in the seed where it was once connected to the plant..points up..the plumule(tail, taproot) comes out of the seem near the opposite end)
much healthier for the seed to be in soil or other medium..than on the paper towel for an extended period of time..
I've been using rapid rooters lately instead of the ol paper towel..with good results.. Pics for fun!!

Germed Seeds

Stuck Helmet

Rapid Rooters

Roots of a clone..I'm using upside down Rapid Rooter here

Just Transplant

Maybe grow one of these..
