According to an Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) report, UK Police uncovered an average of 21 Cannabis farms a day in 2011 - 7,865 in total. Police calculate that they have, in the last couple of years, seized 1.1 million cannabis plants.
"Increasing numbers of organised crime groups are diverting into this area of criminality...” - Allan Gibson, Scotland Yard police commander.
The counties of Devon and Cornwall have apparently seen the highest rise in the number of farms, from 11 to a projected total of 183 since 2009/10 - an increase of 1,664% per cent.
The report also links the economic downturn with an increasing number of 'personal use' cultivation offences with Police intelligence suggesting that the purchase of seeds and hydroponic equipment is on the increase.
