Ugh.. I have Mushrooms..

J

JackTheGrower

I bought a bag of earthworm castings and noticed that it came with a world of critters. What a Zoo of critters.. I bet I get all the plagues at once this year.

Today I went in and hand raked the surface of my soil box to get it ready for a watering and I saw a mushroom!

Well that's interesting but on closer examination there were many and I had just destroyed all of them but for two.

Out of curiosity anyone recognize these?

I'm absolutely out of my element on this.

I guess I was asking if they are the "Magic" kind.. I read more in this forum and I read about testing spore something.

No problems guys just amazed .. What a freakin biological grab bag that bag of worm castings was.

They grew after the raw cane sugar was added.

Thanks

While im no expert on identifying mushrooms, The chances of that being an active mushroom are slim to none. That is sweet though, for any mushroom to grow a lot of things need to occour but I deff wouldn't try eating this.

Do not do this. Eating unidentified mushrooms is a great way to get yourself killed. Very few of the thousands of varieties actually make you trip, and a few more are edible. Never eat any mushroom which you aren't 100% sure what it is and positive about its edibility. When in doubt, toss it out.

Mushrooms in your castings is a great sign! I would be excited if I saw them popping up. It's a sign of healthy castings and lots of microdiversity in the mix, especially since castings are bacteria dominant.

Since the mycelium is still around and feeding off of the decaying matter, you will probably see a bunch more popping up. I wouldn't worry too much about them, and I'd let them fully decay and spore out.

Check out these websites for a bunch of cool info on mushrooms:

Also, when asking about identifying mushrooms, you definitely need to make a spore print. The Shroomery has many experts that can properly identify your mushroom, and usually pretty quickly.

They require the following information (to the best of your ability):

* Habitat (where [woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude] and what [soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?)] does it grow on)
* Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
* Characteristics of the stem (length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
* Characteristics of the cap (diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
* Spore print color (very important!)
* Color that the mushroom bruises
* Scent of the mushroom
* Anything else you might find important

Do Not Eat Them.. You should never eat any mushroom that you are unware of the genetics.. When you use spores from a vendor then you are safe.. Eating a mushroom out of a bag of castings.. That's not adviseable... That's like grabbing a mushroom off your front lawn and eating it... Soo toss it.. Also if your castings were full of critters... I wouldn't buy from that vendor anymore.. No substrate or addative should ever have bugs in it. I don't are what anybody else says.. That's just not good business practice..

You made my day! I didn't know much about worm castings.

I see another today coming up! Edit: Make that over a dozen.

They came up after the washed raw cane sugar was added to the banana chips and rice that were already applied a few days before as a top dressing FYI..

How cool! I love Organic soil! I'll be sure to add an entry to my grow thread.

I knew better than eat them not knowing and feel the poster was being humorous but poster it's on the macabre side of funny..

Thanks guys!

Thanks..

No I understand serious organ damage or death are possible effects of the bad mushrooms.
I'm not going to buy worm castings again if I can avoid that. So it's yellow sticky traps and other things over the next few weeks if I don't see what I like.

That is a bit of a pucker in a way but the mushrooms I read are a good sign!
They should be,, Ha! This soil almost qualifies as a dependent, Been with me longer than the last two GF's.. Only my cat has seniority in my house.. Ha!

Again thanks Mushroom sub for the walk in.
