tying down misshap... WTF?

This year ive been learning how to tie down. Ive been doing it with great results so today I decided to tie down some of the huge branches that the method has produced. So i bend the brach down to tie and it just breaks, right in the crotch next to the stem it just snapped. WHY DID THIS HAPPEN? what a waste...

Plants getting older and a bit more brittle I would guess. I use the pinch and roll method to kink mine into round bushes but only kinkin fresh growth which is normally pretty soft and pliable. Sorry about the break.

plants also harden off the longer they are outside.. they become more barky and tree like

I always thought you were supposed to tie it down bit by bit as not to stress the branch to much. Pull it down a little every time you check on the plant or something like that?

Thats what ur suppose to do. Especially if the plant is older and more barky.
