Twisted leafs and tips curled up, resembles Mg.

This white rhino seed was off to a troubled start, looks like internodal growth from day 0. I am now keeping her at .9 ec and she is eating ( I fed today ). 5.2 to 5.8 ph. Few days ago I did a nute change out. Yesterday I added ~ 1 Table spoon epsom salts ( just a regular breakfast spoonfull eyeballed ) to the 5 gallons of nutes.

Today some red rust spots showed up ontop of leafs only, think it may be pests or related to the epsom salts. they wont showup in pics

It is not heat stress. Verified with IR thermometer and by pulling lights back.

Damn, I thought I was a bad photographer! When mag causes leaf curl, it looks folded or pinched in. Yours are wavy, so that means bad pH or nute problems. The margins of your leaves are also turned up and you have tip burn, so back off on the nutes. The brown flecks are most likely a Ca problem, probably a lockout.

The Epsom won't make red spots but a Calcium def' will, it often goes hand in hand with a Mag deficit, I think you have already started to fix with the salts.

Ok the spot appeared over a week ago and none since so I think that was a different ( or same problem waiting to manifest ) the leaf tips have been since it's birth..

I will definitely back off the nutes then, but is there any reason this PH would cause the issue??

According to my notes 20 - 24th of July:

20: brought PH from 5.9 to 5.0, ec is at 1.0
21: 1.0 ec 6.3ph -> PH down to -> 5.3ph
22: 1.0 ec 5.8ph -> topped off leaving at 5.9ph -> ph down to 5.0
23: 1.0 ec -> changed out nutes fully to -> .7 ec 5.0 ph
24: .9 ec brought ph down from 6.0 -> 5.0

As you can see it looks like I forgot I decided to lower to .7 yesterday and today I thought she was eating, when in fact ec rose meaning .7 was too high still. How could my PH be all over the place like this though, my other buckets are fine and I rinsed their mediums from the same pasta strainer so they all got the same treatment. Could the fast swings ( even tho their in range ) stress the plant? Should I let her for 48hrs at a time even when PH is climbing, just to make sure the swing is more gradual?

Consider a full flush and check your calibration on your tester. 5.0 PH is too low, but who knows, its a crazy weed lol.

Good luck,

They have improved overnight from dropping the ec to .6 this appears to be the main contributor to the problem but I'm sure there was more than one [ problem ]. Judging by the fast response to lowering the nutes it will recover very fast.

hydro is 5.0 - 6.0 and I calibrate 2x a week at least, already went thru the bit and learned the hard way to keep it calibrated. A lot of growers apparently run their ph really low, if you study a nute ph chart you can see why.

Green house seed co which is my breeder for instance runs all their indicas @ 5.5, assuming a normal swing. As you can see uptake levels taper off anything above 5.5, when a lot of growers dont even run below 5.8... sad :-( You can even see the warning bottom right of the graphic "ph below 5.5 cuts phos. and mn"

I had this issue as well, there was some copper-colored discoloration too....it was a pH problem....some better pics are always useful.

Yeah, funny how that is! All I can say to that is that there must be more to this equation mate, cause when I run mine below 5.4, all kinds of problems start to happen. On the other hand 5.6-6.0 (letting it drift within) seems to be doing gerat ;)

Just keep it in mind :)

That dose of epsom was on the strong side for such small plants.....look for yellowing in the upper growth like nuteburn...also that will raise the ph and throw it out....

I can burn them with epsom salts? I figured all it would do is soften the water? Should I purge or just let it ride out?

I would flush & change res asap ;)

;-) thanks for the reply tho

I think he meant to get the epsom salts out of there.
I have no idea why your pH is creeping on just that 1 plant. Shit like that is the reason why I quit hydro. I can tell you that pH swings on their own are very stressful to plants. My :2cents: is that you are much better off at pH 5.8 or 6 than you are having your pH swing a whole point every day. I always liked my hydro pH on the high side, anyway.

Ok well I had switched to plain PHd water lastnight, PHd to 5.5 or something.... today it was at 6.2ph so I added just enough nutes to bring that to 5.8 ph again, its at .2 ec or something like that and appears to be showing new root and vegetative growth ( although slowly )
