Trying to figure out what ballast I have

Got a ballast from a friend. Dont know what size. I think its a 400 but not sure if its a halide or hps. Says Model # S400 120v 60hz, 38amp from Northwest lamp and tube Serial # 6975

Its as big as my 1000W ballast. Let me know if you have the answer.

is that on the ballast box? Did you open it and see what it says inside?

EDIT: Doh!! Open it and if it has an ignitor then its probably HPS (3 components), if not then its MH (just 2 components)

Its on the box, I will open it up and see whats inside. How could I tell the difference bhetween a 400 and a 1000. Will it say on the components?

im guessing its a 400 do to it saying model# s400 but i found the company web page & at the bottom is an address & phone number.i was thinking you could call them & ask them directly.

Thanks for that link, I looked but couldnt find it. Guess cause i was looking under Northwest lamp and tube.
Its a 400hps.

HPS ballasts start with an S http://www.businesslights.com/hps-ballast-kits-c-190.html

S-50 = 250HPS
S-51 = 400HPS
S-52 = 1000HPS

Metal Halides start with an M http://www.businesslights.com/metal-halide-ballasts-c-31.html

M-58 = 250MH
M-59 = 400MH
M-47 = 1000MH

Odd, they have no 600's ...
