Has any one had problems w/ theirs? I am not positive but i think it is reading kind of low. I haven't cleaned it ever, every now and then i rinse it off but thats it. I was gonna buy a cleaning kit but i was wondering if any one has used other solutions to clean w/ that helped such as iso... Thanks

get some ec testing solution and if it dont read what it says on the solution ,then probe is dirty ,,now look at the instructions and clean accordingly ,if its still not reading true try leaving the probe in the testing solution overnight ,rinse clean then retest ,,if this fails send it back,,

p.s if u live in a hard water area regular cleaning is vital ,other wise u get salt build which totally screws the probe

been using the PPM/EC stick for almost 2 years now without a hiccup or a calibration and it's always spot on.

love how it has both scales on it.

if it's actin up after a cleanin give them a buzz .

Yeah I love mine too. I could be wrong about it being off but i did dump alot of nutes in :chin: Thanks though

I did a side by side with another chepo Truncheon and they both read exactly the same. 2 years and going. Haven't even had to replace battery. I don't really clean it as much as just run my finger over the electrodes to make sure they are clean.

My Truncheon EC pen doesn't seem to wanna read anything. I leave it in solution for the required 2 mins (just PH'd water) and it won't even light up upon re-entry to the water. I replaced the batteries....it worked fine intially.....anybody know anything that may prove helpful? I also have a Truncheon PH pen and think it's amazing. Wish I had one of these when I was running my reef tank - it works every time w/o fail. Cool gizmo. :)

i have both the old NZ version and the newer bluelab model.my oldest 1 is adout 4 years old and i clean it after every grow.

in the instructions it says use unscented cream jif/cif(white bottle).

take off the plastic collar around the probe, now put a few drops of liquid jif onto the probes.
with a clean finger gentley rub the jif in circular motions until you see the jif liquid turn a greyish colour.then with the same finger you used for cleaning rinse it under a tap and make sure there is no jif left.cleaning complete.

also take note dont go touching your probe with your finger ike someone mentioned,in the instructions it warns against such things as your skins natural oil can mess up your probe.

My friends and I have had tons of problems with Blue Labs EC Truncheons. Get the cleaning kit and some test solutions to verify. I've cleaned it, dipped it in the res, let it dry out and retest and the reading was already off. Make sure you dip in clean water after testing to help extend the time necessary between cleanings. The cleaning solution is like a mild abrasive like toothpaste it seems.

I don't use Truncheons any more, the last new one read 1413 solution accurately but read 2770 as 2600. Before I started cleaning mine the meter was reading about 2400 but after I got the cleaning kit I found the res was at 4400 :yoinks:. Good thing it was a bulletproof strain.

For about the same price as one Truncheon I went with Hanna's continuous monitor 991404n pH/EC/PPM/temp meter and love it.

Damn i am sick of all these meters breaking on me. Ph meters are like throwaways. Some people really like blue lab and some not so much. I put alot of trust in these things too. Oh well i willl buy the cleaning kit.
I guess i cant bitch to much since i probably use the thing 3-4 times a day and i have never cleaned it

For me if I did not keep up with regular cleaning the readings started to drift lower pretty much immediately. They're also not particularly accurate, +/- 4% of scale I think, but probably close enough to count for growing but I like accuracy and repeatability. One thing I learned about pH probes only recently, for continuous monitoring, is put them in a quiet part of the res as they will hold calibration better and last longer.

If you're checking that much take a look at a continuous monitor meter like a Hanna or Nutradip next time you gotta get some new equipment. Maybe take a look at an isfet pH pen which uses a silcon chip, instead of the typical glass sensor, which you can let dry out. They are very pricey though.

Thanks for the replies. I finally cleaned it and it is fine. I checked the readings in my rez and the run off was over 2.0 and befor the meter was saying it was 1.5 so keep your meters clean...

I used blue labs little cleaning kit for e.c. It was some cheaply made little kit but it worked. I went to like 5 different shops and they told me there was no such thing. Good thing i know the ngw catalog like the back of my hand lol

i've never heard of a cleaning kit for a nz truncheon.maybe they make them now but in their own instuctions they tell you to use unscented jif/cif (white bottle).

bet you that cleaning kit cost alot more than a bottle of jif/cif.1 bottle of jif/cif would last your meter a lifetime and some.

if your ph meter is not registering when you put it in a solution, make sure that the exposed peice of metal on the probe, the tiny strip that is at the submerge to here line, is indeed exposed and clean. that is what triggers the probe to turn on. Sometimes the plastic sheath can slide down and cover it up.

Im not crazy about my bluelab meters, but they work just fine I suppose. though I did have my ph meter go bunk on me. they took nearly 2 months to get me a new one, yea it was warrentee.

Looking into getting a Truncheon meter - Been on there homepage & looks like you need 2 wands if your gonna cover everything.

PH Wand
PPM - EC - CF Wand

Prices are crazy in different places - Whats the best place you guys know of ?

Local shop wants $190 for the new Bluelab PH wand & $130 for the PPM model.. Damn.

Thanks

Same thing i heard. Just use the drip drop ph test. I wish they made a drip EC tds test kit. I like things that are simple and always work. Damn meters. I have heard pretty much every brand trashed on at this point. I came into this thread under the impression that truncheon was a pretty good brand. Shit now I'm back to square one on tds/Ph meeter research. :badday:
