Not just a story, if you look at the polls used to determine such things you'll find that the vast majority have a sampling size of just 1000 people. You can't accurately read the reality of hundreds of millions with just 1000 people. All it does is make it easy to do fast and dirty research that doesn't cost much and will likely get you the results you're looking for. Check it out, next time you see a poll look for the sampling size. If it's just 1000 or even just 10,000 then it's likely not worth the time to consider. There are roughly 330 Million Americans in this country, to have a reliable and fairly accurate poll you need a sampling size of at least 1% which means a pool of at least 3.3 Million people. Anything less is just garbage, no matter what view it supports.
