TrueCrypt

I heard about this free program that can lock your flash drive, hard drive, etc.. and supposedly it can self destruct if too many attempts are made to access the password... so I heard.

It's kind of like that ironkey flash drive but this is a free program. I tried it out for a little bit and it's pretty complicated for me to do as of now; can't quite figure it out. I'm just not the type to follow all these computer/technical terms.

I was wondering if some of you IT professionals could check it out for all of us here at icmag and give us your thoughts on it.. would be much appreciated.

What do you want to know exactly, it's open source so the chances of backdoors etc being held by LEO are slim.
It looks pretty secure, you would need a bit of tech savvy to know what you're doing with it, or you could end up with fried disks.
The FAQ has a step by step installation tutorial http://www.truecrypt.org/faq.php
I'd say it looks pretty good, I've seen mention of it before but have not played with it myself, my opinion is that if they have my pc and it's contents, I'm already fucked :) Only place I keep ongoing pics and records is online not on the local pc, when a grow goes, so do my pics.

I'd say if you're worried it's a nice utility to use, seems to be a good piece of kit with good encryption algorithms in it, if you want to know about that then you have to check the algorithms used, cos the program will only be as good as those, but it all looks good to me.

Thanks for the review..

I'll mess around with it mroe sometime, just wanted some IT pros to check it out to see if it's worth it.

Having files you want hidden or encrypted are much better this way then left on your hard drive for the police to see when they browse through your computer.

I love Truecrypt. Everyone should use it. Everyone. It even has two levels so if you are forced by a court to give up one password there is still a hidden level below that.

It really is fairly simple once you use it a couple times.

TrueCrypt is legit.

Even some businesses that rely heavily on trade secrets or confidential data use it.

Yep I use it on my flash drive and I have an hidden file partition on my laptop. It's definitely worth the download.

I have heard very good things about it. On level one you put a bunch of poo porn and on level two you put your grow info or whatever. Then if you get busted you just cry a little bit then give them the password and it unlocks the poo porn. "Please dont tell my family! cry cry".

Then you walk away scratch free.

You might also be interested in dban. It nukes your hard drive and rewrites the bineray several times. Supposed to be unrecoverable.

My main PC is actually a VM PC inside a hidden Truecrypt volume on a portable USB/Esata drive. The visible volume has loads of portable apps ( portable Firefox, Winrar, Visio2007 for example ) and the first password volume has the same apps but also a a Ubuntu VM in it to look legit so that no-one has any idea that there is a 2nd passworded hidden volume. I doubt the 3 tier encryption used to hide it would be crackable by anyone other than say the NSA even if they knew it was there.
Which volume is decrypted and mounted depends on the password you enter and the hidden volume cannot be detected as the encryption blends it into the random data on the drive.

It's not complicated and it keeps prying eyes out of things they shouldn't be looking.
Anyone not using it should really give it look.

SB7,What! You got to be one smart dude. You talk as if you do this in your sleep. It will take me weeks just to figure out what you said. I have no chance of figuring out how you do the things you do. Just when I thought I should look into this TrueCrypt. How do you do the things you do? LOL

I used it till I broke my cheepy no name flash drive physically. I'd use it again. Flash drives are cheep these days.

Probably good to have a backup on another flash drive just in case you break yours too lol.

Its a nice app.

unless you physically destroy a hard drive or completely re write new information over it (which takes hours) you are not completely safe. Granted it would cost a ton of money to make it happen and you'd prob have to be dealing with DEA/FBI, the fact is no program is 100% safe.
