Tropical Indica

Guest

I have a question about growing a pure indica in the tropics. I live in Colombia S.A. but not in the humid lowlands. I am growing in the central highlands a few hundred miles from the equator and at over 9,000ft. Due to altitude the temps stay “cool” like 40F to 70F and the sun shines (when it’s not raining) about 12 ½ hours year round. I have grown out several local Sativa and they did pretty good but I think the cold temps made them grow slow, one plant taking almost 10 months to finish. I wanted to grow some pure indica in this climate. I grow outside in organic soil and natural equatorial sun but it is a little cold here. My question is do you think a northern pure indica would grow well here and what seed bank “brand” would you recommend.

I think in order to grow an indica at 12/12 constantly you will end up with something simmilar to a SOG bud which would only be about 1/2-1 oz per plant. What I would suggest is starting them inside under 24 hour fluorescent light for a month or 2 then putting it outside. That should work well. As for recommendations, well im not really an outside grower so I couldnt recommend an indica for outdoors. Im sure someone will come along to give you some suggestions.

Thank you very much everyone. It's funny about the 12 on 12 off sun here cause my sativas all seem to autoflower right at 90 days but then it's another 4 or 5 months before harvest. I didn't know if indicas would grow like that here (3months veg then flower).

Hey redone. Looks very nice where your at. As long as you don't get frost where your at those temps you mentioned will be alright. THey might grow a little slow if started outdoors though. Like suggested in an earlier post i would start indicas indoors then you could grow them to the size you want then just stick them outside to flower. They would also handle the colder temps better. As long as you veg the indicas indoors you can grow just about any indica strain you want. Most plants do better outside anyways. Check out the highland and lowland afghanis that Reeferman sells. Hope this helps. Goodluck in what you decide to do. Peace and *bong* :friends:

Thanks so much for the info. and ideas. It never freezes here but it is kind of cool. The sun is as intense as it gets and even some of my sativas can't tolerate direct exposer. I guees I will have to start and grow them outside due to lack of space in the casa. I will be starting a new grow in about a month and I hope to get some killer indica beans before. And i just got some very nice domestic gold (not from Santa Marta) and I got few seeds from that I am going to grow out. Of course I will post many pics. Thanks again everyone!

Hmm gold... Wanna trade :D
I think starting an indica inside would be about the only way to keep it from flowering right off. Maybe you could find a good hybrid that resembled an indica but has to be mature to flower more like a sativa. I wish you luck in your seedquest! I saw the pics of the columbian you grew on another post. Very nice... very nice indeed!

Thanks Dubmantx, I got seeds from all the great Colombian strains, reds, golds and even the black wacky weed. The smoke I got the seeds from was just like I had 30 years ago when I lived in Texas. However the sinsemilla I grow from the seeds is much better. Come on down if you want a nice tropical holiday and you can sample and trade. It's all good.

How is your situation regarding privacy?? and security... would you be able to build a greenhouse or polytunnel of some kind.... that would help some wioth the cool temps I guess,
But may I say WOW.... what a beautiful place... Kinda looks like our yorkshire dales and the the pennines...lol i sure wth a lovely enviroment and such clean air that you must have...you will find something suited to your needs..... I think as others have sai though, starting you plants off indoors to grow them up to a good age before putting them out woud be the way to go with Indica for you with the light situation...
Best of luck....

I would suggest setting up a light indoors so as to ready moms and cuts for transplant. Temperatures allowing, you could easily perpetually harvest cuts put outside year round. That is if indica is your thing :D

Problem is I really don't have a place to grow inside (my Colombian wife thinks it's crazy to try to grow weed inside). I guess I could set up a little greenhouse. The climate here (to me anyway) is perfect year round, it's "cool" here and I prefer cool to the HOT on the coast. As far as seeds they are here, all the classics (gold, red, ect.). I am sure the reason you don't get this fantastic weed up there any more is cause there's more profit in coke. But I have seeds from all them, if someone's interested please contact me (I don't sell seeds but would love to trade or give).

Lowland Highland

These are two differnt kinds of Sativa I grew here. The leaf on the left came from some very nice "lowland"bud and on the right is from "highland"bud (much better really). The highland sativa (some not all) seems to grow alittle like an indica with kind of fat leaves and no where near as tall. Both plants produced some very frosty potent bud but I prefer the highland.....

sounds like a fun place to grow , similar to where i am , but a bit higher .. and yes you can take full advantage of indicas there .. but beware of your wet season ,,, we usually grow sativas in our wet season and indica in the dry season ... the indicas willnot tolerate the rain ..
i know most say start them under lights , but i wouldnt ,, this makes them trigger straight into flower when they go outdoors ,, best to begin them where they are to grow and get them to burst into growth as fast as you can , the shock going from indoors under lights to the hot tropical sun is too much for them and takes 2 weeks to recover from ...
i find it a lot better growing a sativa / indica hybrid , you may do aswell .. and take full advantage of the fact you can grow all year round , ...

Thanks WALLYDUCK, it's a strange climate here for sure. I have been living here a few years and have yet to see a real rainy season. Of course it rains some times but it seems to me the weather stays pretty much the same year round. My wife says there a "winter" here but I have yet to see it.
I want to grow a pure Indica here but also want to cross with my very potent Sativas. I havn't smoked an Indica or hybred (that I know of anyway) for maybe 7 years and I want the mix in my garden down here. Thanks again everyone.

Rather than bringing the plants inside, why not put the light out side.
You already have 12 hours of sunlight, you only need 4-6 hours more to keep them in veg.Even a small hps security light would probably maintain the light cycles
You could even change to the 12/12 light cycle gradually just like Mother Nature by reducing the amount of light by a few minutes a week.

That is a GREAT idea ! Put some lights outside (why didn't I think of that!). That really is a good idea JLP, I have a place I move them (the plants) when it rains and it would be no problem putting a light there. And then I can work out there at night as well. But really thanks I will post some pics when I get all set up.
