Trimming flowering plant?

Hey there guys my plant is in its 4th week of flowering and the bud are starting to for got some long white hairs going on but i've noticed that the flowers are only looking promising about 3/4 of the way down my plant. I had a few fan leaves die in the veg stage and it looks like the little branches below that are not forming compared to the top, i was wondering if i should cut them loose so my plant will not use energy on these small pistils.

I do this regularly, helps to focus the growth in the portion of the plant most directly under the lights.
