IT APPEARS THERE'S AN ISLAND IN THE PACIFIC TWICE THE SIZE OF TEXAS.
Someone told me and I didn't believe them. SO I came home to call schanagins and sure enough with a google search of " trash bag island pacific ocean". I got an article from the SFgate.com who else but SF gotta love it.

Maybe some capitalist will build a boat that takes up the plastic and gets a free source of recyclables that constantly resupplys itself with crap from beaches etc. It's also worth noting that fish traverse oceans using flotsam and jetsom as cover and meeting places so it's not all bad. I'm sure if you look underneath it you'll find a huge ecosystem forming in the cover provided. Not ideal but still a plus.

I'm all about saving/conserving/protecting mother earth but this sounds like an exageration or a completely made up story. If this "island" was even the size of hawaii it would have global media coverage, claiming its TWICE the size of Texas?!?! That's just insane imo. There would be no way to hide something so massive and the entire world would know about it. Maybe they're tryin to say the combined area of all the trash in our oceans is that size and the story got twisted somehow? Not tryin to be a dick here, just seems pretty crazy to me.

Hell, if it is true we need to plant the IC flag and claim this continent! You could grow a lot of herb on something twice the size of Texas, and imagine how much sun it would get floating in the ocean! Hook some pontoons up to it and overgrow the WORLD haha.

edited to add: if this is real, SOMEONE would have a picture of it, no one in the world could prevent the press from snappin a pic of something twice the size of Texas. If the media can get pictures of lindsay lohans tits falling out of her shirt, they can get a pic of a continent!!! the burden of proof is on those claiming this is real and the solution is simple, get some pics or go home. innocent until proven guilty...

Its not really an island. Its just what they are calling the collective trash that is circling around in the ocean's currents. The plastic and trash masses together because of the way that the currents flow, and the fact that there aren't a lot of islands for the trash to wash up on. Its not solid in any way, but it still is a huge amount of trash floating around in the ocean. So yes, the story is kinda true.

this stuff is disgusting.
It dosnt mean recycle more it means produce less consume less. i usually am discouraged at buying certain things just due to tjhe amount of plasticpackaging and crap that comes with it.

Bills are up in california to clean up the plastics industries and styrofoam restaraunt containers. the goverenor is an asss and is vetoing like crazy pls get involved and help out pls keep pushing for hemp as a new source for all that ills society.

if what they say is true the proof of it's existence would include:
1. be visible from google earth?
2. there would be tons of pics because something like that cannot be kept secret.
3. people would be able to see it from an airplane, considering Hawaii is probably one of the most traveled to places in the world. People would think they're over the ocean and surely someone would see this continent sized trash heap.
