transplant shock

I transplanted three plants in 5 gal smart pots into 25 gal pots and lost half the roots. Can they survive the transplant shock?

What u mean lost half the roots, like half your rootball broke off when you took it out to transplant? As long as you still have healthy roots on there it will grow more. Just gonna take a little longer.

Yeah, the roots were stuck to the bottom and sides of the pot. Two of the plants had not yet filled their containers and when I moved them I lost a lot of dirt and some roots. They're watered into potting soil with guano

I try not to put plants in smart pots that i know I'm going to have to transplant but i have before, all i do is cut the pot down the side with a razor blade in 3 or 4 places and slowly peel back the sides. After that you can slowly peel it up off the bottom and if you have to, use a razor blade to cut the roots that are holding the block of soil to the bottom of the pot.

Yeah thanks. That was supposed to be their final pot, then I decided to move them outside. And just the other day I saw fabric pots online that were made for transplants.
