Hi guys, Is it a good idea to take your clone from cup to final home (10 gal) or is it best to go to 3 gal. first, form root ball then transplant. I've heard conflicting info. Thanks

was told forming a root ball was important. The other info was the same as Jnugg. this is my first time with 10 gal. pots. 5 before
You can go either way but I find that transplanting in stages works best for me. How hard is it?, you guys are that busy? If you don't over water and growth is fast and healthy bigger containers should do good. Best of luck on your project.NS

personally i prefer to repot more times as i feel it encourages more root mass and the roots colonise the soil more efficiently. i also dont have veg space for huge pots.
others will go straight to the final pot and this also works well if you take care not to over-water because a small plant in a huge pot of wet soil will take ages to dry out and may suffer from lack of oxygen at the roots.
i would say it is harder to f**k up with repots - but again you need to make sure the plant doesnt become root bound in the smaller pots.
repotting just before flower (or a week before) will probably encourage more stretch in the plant. this can be useful if you are scrogging and want to fill the screen or fi you have plenty of space.

Love to pick your brain, you get such good results I've been duplicating your methods. What size pots do you go through VG and how long in each size?
it varies, and some of this is due to size constraints, but i germinate or pot up a clone in a 1/2 litre pot using light soil, then go to a 1 litre, then 2.5 litres. sometimes i will go straight to the 15 litre / 4 gallon flowering pot or i may do a 3 or 5 litre pot inbetween.
i either flower straight away after the last repot or veg for up to a week depending on the cut/strain.
if i am sexing plants i find that they show much quicker when in a small pot and getting a little rootbound, so i try and sex them in their 2.5 litre pots and then move to bigger pots straight away after i know they are girls

I plant 4 inch seedlings straight into 25 gal pots.
Verdant says above the problem with this is a large wet soil mass that might negatively effect the seedling.
no doubt this is true ... BUT ... I ensure my medium (organic soil, no perlite/vermiculite, just natural) is VERY well drained.
I have NEVER had a seedling this size 'damp off'.

Interesting, that's pretty much what I do as well, how long do you give them at each stage? Do you just go by how it's responding or..?
When I have them in the smallest pots I tend to look for the roots to show at the drain holes to determine when to move up.

Thanks alot all. Have always transplanted from cups to 1gal.--3gal.--5gal and always had great results. I'm always willing to try something new. Am allowed 12 and just now figured out that 6 in the bloom room (bigger pots) & 6 in veg beats the heck out of growing 12 all the way through, DAA Always learning,sometimes very slowly, Again, Thanks

I had always heard that transplanting is a stress on the plant.
I went so far as to make a small cup-sized depression in the
FFOF in 3 gal smart-pots and filled them with Light Warrior,
putting my germinated seeds into the LW. Zero transplants.
It worked fine, but I am happy to have my thinking expanded.
(heh heh)
