You don't want to top or fim too many branches. I only top a plant once when it is about 6 - 8' tall. If you give it the right size container....it will branch out nicely and be ready to flower at about 12".
Having too many bud tips is not a good thing. Much like the scrog method is wrong, unless you must because of constrained space and only one plant to grow. Otherwise....why stress the plant out with all the trimming and training? The plant only has so much energy to give. If you spread it out among too many bud sites...your flowers will be smaller. Period. Stress does not make for a happy healthy plant. After you top any plant...it takes about a week for it to fully recover and start growing vigorously again.
Go ahead and flame my scrog criticism if ya like folks....but it's a fact.
Absolutely, suburbanhomeboy. I myself went through all this from single cola to topping, lst, scrog... then back to topping and returned to single cola grows - much more enjoyable! I still top from time to time when space even tho it indeed does delay harvest and stress plants.
