I have heard that topping is good for the plant, and was wondering how often a plant can be topped? If any of you learned growers could give me some advice, I would be very grateful.
as often as you want depending on how old the plant is. if its a seedling i wouldnt start topping before the 6th node appears you might slow the plant down as some dont branch at all and some wont branch till after flower starts and by then you will have a stumpy plant with nothing but a bud on the top and little tiny flower puffs on the nodes.
but after you have some branches going you can top as often as you need to. just know that the top will stop growing and the next node down will take over the growing, so if theres no next node down on the branch don't top it.
Check into using the FIM method this is a way of topping the plant to give you 8 new starts at the top of the plant instead of just two. This is great if your looking for a more bushy plant instead of the Christmas tree shape.
It really depends on what you're trying to do. Not much headroom? Topping can help to control the stretch if you're growing trees or bushes. Whereas, topping a SOG grow will delay things while it heals and is kind of pointless since they won't get all that tall.
From what I've seen training seems to work better if you have plenty of space and a limited plant number. If you're doing a sea of green you can get 4-6 main colas with a 1x1 space per plant...I guess it kind of depends on the plant, everyone should do well with training where as sativas seem a little more suited for topping generally. Doing a little of both is probably the best depending on the strain and circumstance.
