Topical Ointment/Tincture

O

OG Royal Grower

One of my good friend's grandmother used to make a tincture from the male plants that she rubbed on her skin for treatment of pain and arthritis. I was just wondering if anyone had hear or used something similar.

Tinctures are not new.
Until cannabis was banned in 1937, tinctures were the primary type of cannabis medicines.
Tinctures are essentially alcohol extractions of whole cannabis (usually the flowers and trim leaves).
Tinctures are easy to make and very inexpensive

Tinctures contain all 60 of the essential cannabinoids instead of only one with Marinol.
Some of the cannabinoids such as cannibidiol (CBD) actually reduce the psychoactive effects of THC while increasing the overall efficacy of the preparation.

The best way to use tinctures is sublingually (under the tongue)...

Titration or dose control is easily achieved by the number of drops a patient places under the tongue where the medicine is rapidly absorbed into the arterial system and is quickly transported to the brain and body.
All a patient need do with tincture is use a few drops, wait for the desired medical effects, and either use more or stop as the situation indicates.

Tinctures can be flavored for better taste.

They are best stored in dark bottles in the refrigerator.
Since tinctures average some 75% ethanol there is little worry of bacterial or other biological contamination.
Those who wish to avoid alcohol can instead use their tincture as a base for making a concentrated elixir.
While elixir is absorbed into the venous system via the GI tract it is still reasonably quick acting if used on an empty stomach.
Elixir is usually made with honey and tastes good.
It can be used by the teaspoon either alone or in a beverage of choice like tea.

Thanks boggled!

Yea, I want to ask my grandmother about her using Medical Marijuana, and I am hoping then to become her caregiver and purchase and or grow for her, then in turn, making her the salve ointment.

She uses pain pills for her knee pain and other pains, had double knee surgery, and I was hoping the pointment could take away her knee pain, eliminating the pain pills. Would it be as effective? OR would it just be something that would go with the pain pills?

You might also want to consider Cannabrex. You make the pills at home from pot or hash, and their process suposedly increases the strength by something like decarboxylation. I've made the pills and liked them. I just ordered the 3X kit and I will be using some hash to make the pills.

You might consider these for your grandmother. 1 pill lasts about 8 hours - sometimes longer. They help my arthritis - now I only use the bong for "boosters". Not affiliated, just a happy user.

As to ointments, have you considered making an alcohol based hash (QWISO), but instead of evaporating it fully, only go to a thin state, then bottling it in an airtight bottle for local use on the knee. I've never tried this, so take it only as a suggestion to try. Kinda like perfume, the alcohol is either absorbed or evaporates, leaving the material. Watch out for sticky knees! LOL....

An ointment or salve can be made very simply. My wife and I mainly smoke out of a Volcano and this leaves us with quite a bit of 'vapor poo'. I used this to make my ointment. I would say we had a couple ounces although I didn't weigh it beforehand. Here's how I made some this weekend that worked wonderfully on my muscle spasms:

First off, put your material in a glass mason jar that can take high heat and place it in a water bath. I put a small wire triangle under my jar to raise it off the bottom of the saucepan, but I don’t know if you need this, it’s cheap insurance, though. Next, pour olive oil over the material until it is covered with one and a half times the material. That is, once the material is covered, continue adding olive oil until you have another half again as much as you added to cover your material. I've also read "cover herbs so oil is one inch above level of material". Your choice.

Cap the jar tightly and turn on the heat. Bring the water to a boil and continue boiling for 6-8 hours (Make sure you don’t boil off all the water!). I’ve also heard of people using a crock pot for this. Sand can be used in the place of water if you don’t want to keep checking on the water level. When done, pour the oil (while still hot) through cheesecloth or similar material to remove the solids. Squeeze out as much oil as you can from the ball. You can use this ball of spent material itself as a topical “balm bag”, but you’re really interested in the olive oil.

You can use this oil for cooking, rub it on aches, pains and spasms, or encapsulate it for canna-caps. If you want to make an actual salve, you’ll need to add beeswax to your oil. The tricky part of this is determining exactly how much beeswax is needed to harden the salve. You can approximate the proportions based on the following equivalents. One pint of oil will need about 1 1/2 ounces of beeswax, or one ounce of oil will need about 1/2 teaspoon of beeswax. There are about 5 teaspoons of beeswax in an ounce.

So, take note of the amount of oil you have and pour into a cleaned double boiler pan or jar. (Write it down so you don't forget). Raise the temperature of the skillet so the oil is at 150º F. (Beeswax melts at approximately 148º F).

When 150º F has been reached and maintained steadily, add grated beeswax to the oil and stir until all the wax is melted. To test to see if your salve is hard enough, put some on a spoon and set it in a cool place for a few minutes. If your salve is too soft, add more beeswax. If it’s too hard, add oil.

If you are using essential oils or Vitamin E you can blend them in now. Finally, pour your salve into containers and label.

Alternatively, you can steep your material in lard and use this as a salve directly. I’m not much for rubbing fat on myself, so I haven’t tried this method.

Let us know how it works for you...

I'm not trying to trash talk your idea about ointment, but how exactly does the THC or CBD absorb into the skin? I understand how it would work if you drank the THC infused alcohol, but how does this help when applied directly to the skin?

I am just curious about this idea, I'm not saying that it can't be done. I just want more info from those who have actually tried it or know something about HOW it works. Thanks! Peace!!

Trumie, I personally don't know, but I think the thc could be absorbed through the skin, and maybe the alcohol helping it do so...

Brutte, Wow, thank you so much. This could be a big help. Appreciate it very much!

Keefhead, how does Cannabrex compare to actually prescription thc containing pills? Such as Marinol. My Grandma currently takes Marinol, but she is taking like 3-4 to get any of the effects she needs, such as increase in appetite and pain relief. But because of the amount of pills she takes, it is getting her really "intoxicated."

I think a combination of the topical ointment, and a small joint, could easily relieve her pain and increase her appetite without having to use pain pills and what not. And at the same time, wouldn't get her as "intoxicated." Or maybe the topical ointment, and cannbrex or eatibles?

What do you all think? I really want to help out my Grandma, as I fear all these prescription pills are going to lead to something worse.

Well, if you're looking to get high from an ointment, it isn't going to happen. For me, it works more like a topical anesthetic than anything else. Many substances can be absorbed through the skin and, in fact, medicines can translocate anywhere in the skin. My wife uses fentanyl patches for her pain, people use nicotine patches for smoking, women use estrogen patches for menopause, it goes on and on.

I don't think oil is as active as alcohol, but alcohol is pretty hard to work with as a topical...

Has anybody ever tried this as a dermal application using DMSO?
I have'nt heard of this stuff in a few years, but remembered You can get it at some Feed-stores, and large animal vet supplys.

Just a thought, as I'm looking into making a batch of MJ-balm for Myself.

^^^^ I've heard of this anecdotally before, but not tried it myself. Something about DMSO scare the poop outta me. I don't know, maybe it DMSO's ability to move anything through the skin...including heavy metals, carcinogens and other nasties that are in our everyday environment...
