is it really necessary to scratch it into the soil? I have straw laying down, was wondering if i can just sprinkle it over that and soak it in good?

maybe it would act more like a slow release??

Thanks in advance!

depends what you are using and how much, a thick layer can get wet and turn into a crust keeping out oxygen.
good to mix your top dress with compost or EWC first IME, I dont typically scratch it in at all.

tested and balanced my beds ala Slownickle this year and they are raging...

after putting the minerals down I'm adding top dress of Gypsum, bone meal, kelp meal, alfalfa meal, fish bone meal, shrinp meal, blood meal to maintain and feed the soil and the plants.

I personally like to put a thin layer over the straw and water it in. Straw is nice and porous to let it through and structured enough to keep from crusting if you don't lay it down too thick. Better to use small amounts more frequently than large amounts less frequently.
