mdogg writes "Brilliant Digital Entertainment, an Australian software company, has grabbed the attention of the NY attorney general's office with a tool they have designed that can scan every file that passes between an ISP and its customers. The tool can 'check every file passing through an Internet provider's network — every image, every movie, every document attached to an e-mail or found in a Web search — to see if it matches a list of illegal images.' As with the removal of the alt.binary newgroups, this is being promoted under the guise of preventing child porn. The privacy implications of this tool are staggering."

looks like no more file transmitting from any computers i own

thumb drive it to someone elses box and send space 4 later

Ya, well if this is now available to an attorney general I'm sure the illegal patriot act has used this in combination with something probably far more superior.

Frustrating nonetheless

Let's see... in 2004 there were 204+ million people with internet access... considering there are only a few major ISPs that would equal to a crapload of traffic for each ISP... the amount of computing power required to scan network traffic would be staggering... no for profit company would spend the amount of money required to maintain these resources... only the NSA probably has the computational framework to do this and they couldn't give a crap about people surfing these forums...

You've hit the nail on the head here. There isn't enough processing power in the whole world that could monitor this much traffic and search it for some data.

Even if they do find a way to bottleneck the traffic and place taps, it wouldn't be hard to poison it with enough false positives to render the system useless.

It's just another way for some company to permanently latch onto the government contract teat.

its old tech

but you needed packet sniffing and an it crew not a piece of software

as you can see by my gallery and post count i exploit the system not avoid it

i do think think that having someone encroach your rights and set presidence because everyone accepts seriously threatens our liberties, which are the last bastion of fortitude us american growers have

I think you guys should consider the bigger picture. Sure it is hardly feasible right now, but this is just a 'start' for them. What about the future? If these are the things being concentrated on. I think the future holds more control for the internet just because of security reasons. The more technology the more likely internet surveillance will just be a security precaution. What they do with the unneeded info who knows. Kind of like phone companies, can hear everyone but they aren't going to scan each person and report them.
