Too Stupid to Get High

I stumbled across an interesting nugget of information. It was nestled in a collection of tidbits grouped under the headline "9 science-backed signs you're smarter than average". The nugget in question is that using recreational drugs is a science backed sign that you're smarter then average. The science behind it was a 2012 study of more than 6,000 Brits born in 1958 found a link between high IQ in childhood and the use of illegal drugs in adulthood.

Here is a link to the study in question:

Now to be fair I'd have to say that to say using recreational drugs means you're smarter then average, would be an incorrect interpretation of the study results. I say that because I have met plenty of people who get high that are dumber then a box of rocks. I think a more correct interpretation is that people who are smarter then average don't just take the word of authorities or governments that recreational drugs are bad but rather they test it for themselves and draw their own conclusions.

I just had to put it out there though because one gets tired of hearing about studies that claim to prove marijuana makes you dumb and it's refreshing to see studies that tend to draw different conclusions.

History does support that many intelligent people, even Geniuses use or used marijuana. Folks like Carl Sagan, Seth MacFarlane, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, just to name a few. There are many other examples but I'll leave it up to the individual to research who they are if one is so inclined.

I think this might be a classic example of correlation vs causation. Just thinking out loud here, but my guess is that smarter people probably do drugs in a higher percentage than not-so-smart people do, but that is not to suggest that being smart LEADS to drug use.

I figure I’m smart because I keep testing, testing, and testing…not necessarily looking for the same results.

I figure smarter folks don't believe it when the govt says "it'll turn your brain into smegma", plus I think we get bored quicker and look for something "different" so to speak. you have to be intelligent to be adventurous and willing to try new things...
