What causes tolerance and how can you lower you tolerance towards cannabis. obviously taking a break from smoking is a great way to do it also switching up the strains you smoke but how log do you have to take the break for. no research shows that cannabis is out of your system within 11 days not the 30 days once believed so does that mean a 11 day break will bring your tolerance down to base line levels. i understand that their is a psychological aspect to this as when you first smoked marijuana the experience was more extreme but as you become accustomed the the experience it becomes less extreme this is a tolerance build up absent biological factors. for those of you with a degree in biochem what is it that causes your tolerance to increase. also i read some time back on a site that a vitamin supplement such as b12 (could have been something else) helps to lower or rather resist increases in tolerance.

sorry, i didn't have my glasses last night and i was a little drunk....

no matter how long of a break you take, you will never return to baseline IME. I have a really bad time with tolerance, after smoking about 5 grams of the same weed, it will do almost nothing to me. My advice would be to take as long as a break as you can stand and then smoke/vape very sparingly and switch up strains as much as possible, switch between indicas and sativas as much as possible and hopefully that will help.

The mammalian brain creates an equilibrium by manipulating the number of active THC receptors to effectively put a ceiling on the drug's effectiveness. The more marijuana a person smokes, fewer THC receptors remain active. If a person rarely smokes, or only does so occasionally, the receptors will stay functioning and the "high" can be achieved with a relatively small dose.

The psychological effects of marijuana are not solely due to THC. While THC is the major psychoactive ingredient that is responsible for the altered sense of reality and euphoric feelings, another constituent of the smoke, cannabinol (CBN), produces only the depressant effects. Tolerance does not develop to this chemical. The paradoxical situation this sets up is this: to maximize the desired effects, a smoker must maintain moderate use. This will keep the THC receptors active, but minimize the proportional amount of CBN ingested. For more information on the specifics of marijuana tolerance, look at Jon Gettman's Marijuana and the Brain, Part II: The Tolerance Factor

ok maybe i should further explain. i know how to lower my tolerance im simply trying to understand it more. ie the question. i know you have to take a break but how long? is it just removal of all foreign cannboids from your body that lowers your tolerance or does cannabis create a morphological change or biochemical change in the structure and operation, resepctivly, of the brain. have sampled 8 different strains in the past 3 to 4 weeks so switching up the strain is something i already know about. also i have been way higher than my first time smoking herb, everyone says you cant get as high as when you first smoked but i think thats bull because in the last couple months ive probably had 3 experiences which i would rate as above that of my first high. and my first high was great dont get me wrong i was twisted stumbling bumbling laughing ect.

the reason i am asking this question is so i know how to best take breaks. i read something a few days back that said that THC levels in the body droped below the level noticable on a drug test with in 11 days not the 30 days it was once thought to take. now if tolerance is simply related to THC and other cannaboids in your body then an a 11 day break would be all you need not the 30 days. now if this is not the case then my question is what exactly causes a tolerance to build up in an individual. we know its from marijuana but what does the marijuana do to your system which lessens its effect. is it simply high levels of cannaboids in the body or does marijuana leave any lasting effects, create any molecules via interaction with the body that might raise tolerance.

I have hard times taking breaks. I smoke 3-4 times a day. Everytime I smoke I can feel it, but like once every three days I get mind bending highs. These are way stronger than my first toke after taking a few days off ( i have taken different lengths on/off).

So maybe just smoke moderately, but often like me.

Hello all,

I would consider you a very lucky soul beacause int eh 30 years I have been smoking I have never had that same feeling I did that first time.

And I was twisted, stumbling bumbling and laughing at everything. I had never felt as high as that first day.

Not even the next day when I smoked my second session did I get like I did the day before....I have been chasing that high ever since. Classic textbook addiction.

Anyway..how long to quite for...thats dependant on you, your bodies ability to clean itself out so to speak. You mentioned 11 days...its all arbitraury.

Good luck.

Hey,

what I've always done is quit for 2-3 days, and on the 4th NIGHT, I will smoke one bowl, and I'll be pretty fucking good. :) I dont know how it would work for others, but it suits me well.
