JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- An 18-month-old was treated for having cocaine in her system after a worker at her church preschool noticed the girl acting unusual, authorities said Wednesday.
The girl, who is not being named, was taken to the hospital by her parents after the worker at Promise Land Preschool at First Baptist Church of Mandarin, who is also related to the toddler, noticed she would not eat and was unsteady on her feet on Monday.
"When the mother picked the child up she was not as active as usual, walked only on her tip-toes and was bobbling and staggering," the report said. "The child would not eat or allow parents to examine her ears or head."
The girl was taken to Wolfson Children's Hospital for examination, where she tested positive for cocaine. Officials said she is expected to be fine.
The toddler's parents tested negative for cocaine, authorities said. The parents told authorities the girl was fine when she was dropped off at the school.
Case information will go to detectives who investigate child abuse, sheriff's spokeswoman Melissa Bujeda said. The Florida Division of Children and Families is also investigating.
"We'll talk to the family. We'll talk to people who know the child -- family, neighbors, other people who came in contact with the child," DCF spokesman John Harrell said. "Our key priority is the safety of the child. We want to be as through as possible."
A pastor of the First Baptist Church of Mandarin told Channel 4's Laura Mazzeo that they have never had any problems like this before, and he's pretty sure the baby didn't get the cocaine at the preschool.
Twelve to 14 employees at the church underwent interviews and drug screenings, but all the results came back negative, the Rev. Gary Williams said.
"It's my earnest belief that it did not happen here," Williams said. "I pretty much know many of our employees and staff. We do go through screenings, we do go through background checks, so I'm not 100 percent sure, by I'm fairly sure."
Promise Land director Maxine Williams said the preschool remained open during the investigation.
Whatever peice of shit that did that is gonna pay.....
