Today, the swedish parliament held debate over proposed legislation. If it pass, the swedish military will be given the "right" to surveillance of ALL electronic communications of EVERYONE.

Leading politicians claim this to be a necesary evil in order to combat terrorism, naturally. But the only ones that will actually be affected by the legislation are ordinary people who will find themselves under constant government surveillance.

The left-wing opposition is said to be against this measure, and a few right-wing parliamentarians are also against. If passed, it will effectively demolish swedish democracy and turn the country into a totalitarian state. Thinking about what that piece of legislation means, especially in the long run, hurts my heart.

This is my well wishes, for Sweden - its people and those in the swedish parliament preparing to take the vote against this legislation. The vote is scheduled to take place tomorrow morning at nine local time.

Sweden's not right-wing, lol. It's a social democrat country and these fascist laws are no big surprise to me at all.

I was frightened shitless when I heard about this. Even if this can be considered as a quite "small" step, it nibbles our freedom.

Well, right or left wing really - it makes no difference. This project was started by a left-wing social democratic coalition regime a few years back, and has now been put into force by the current right-wing "alliance" parties.

Some left-wing leaders has pledged to tear the legislation appart if they are elected in 2010. However, I dont believe that will happen at all. My guess is they will use it as an argument in order to push the process even further once elected.

I dont think anyone really considers mass-surveillance a "small" step toward a totalitarian control-regime in any democracy, neither fascists nor democrats. As of now, anyone speaking of the swedish government may leave out the that "democratic" part.

I think it is best not to view this as something that "nibbles" our freedom, I hold it to be a fundamental step taken in a process aiming to strip all our freedoms away to ensure the state as "absolute". Sweden is now an example, better know that every European country is under pressure to walk down the very same road.
