To greenhouse or not to greenhouse?

Hello all,

I mentioned this before in another thread and while I recieved positive answers they were not what I was looking for.

So here goes again.

I have a couple of plants in half wine barrels on my back patio. There is no other place to move them to as this is the best place inthe backyard.

To the south is my backdoor neighbor and not really a concern as there is an 8 foot hedge and trees blocking his view..least he should climb the fence and peek through.

To the west is my office and trees beyond..this is unfortunate as this blocks the direct sun starting at mid afternoon.

My neighbors to the east are a concern as they have view through the chainlink w/ slats. I would not expect my neighbors would rip me off but someone they know that will see them could.

In addition, I have two 17yo daughters (yes twins..) with lots of friends that come over that if they look out back they will see them (and they have...so security is shot already).

So my intent is to do some damage control by constructing a greenhouse made with pvc and 6 mil polyfilm.

Only needs to last till mid-October.

In addition with the wierd weather we have been having in Nor*Cal I fear early rains and the protection that the greenhouse offers is ideal.

So the goals to achieve are psuedo-stealth and protection from rain in the fall.

Now, I live at 41*N and today it was 113*F with little wind.

I am concerned that the plants will FRY.

I was thinking that only the back (north side) and the sides (east and west) need be covered in film to achive the psuedo stealth leaving the southern exposure un-covered with film.

So what are your thoughts and why if you please....

There is coffee and danish on the table...talk amoungst yourselves.

I personally think it is a good idea to shelter them with a greenhouse, especially if you have teenage daughters at that age with friends. As soon as harvest time is close, they stand out like a sore thumb and stink real bad as you already know.

There are many options out there.
Its finding the right one for you.
I'm presently in the same type of situation. I'm legal but don't want to be ripped off.
Sometimes I wonder whether adding the greenhouse is more of attraction to them but I don't want to be over confident either.

You can make small little hoop houses made from pvc and either 6 ml plastic or opague material.
This is all new to me also as i am only just learning about greenhouses. They definitely extend the growing season by quite a bit.

Good luck to you.

How about making your frame, and during the heat right now, cover it with shade cloth...gives it some shade from the blistering sun, and lots of air, and stealth--
Then when it starts to cool off, you can switch to plastic--:tiphat:

This is a great idea or maybe even just add it over.
Would that work?

I am presently going to go with the portable garage frame idea. The frame is strong and sturdy and it would probably cost more to make it yourself.

Double JJ, the guy who just posted above me has an awesome idea.

hey broo.. i read your thread.. i hope is not late..

have you think about a green house shelter.. i have been looking to this GH.
THE RHINOSHELTER or another one call SHELTERLOGIC.

I am not familiar with this GH, at all... but i think they can do the job..
and from a far distance they look like a typical outdoor party tent.

i leave south of texas, close to the border and it gets really hot too !!!! almost 40.C
and we get crazy early storms and category 2 hurricanes on the spring.

so if anyone has any story to shared about this shelter kits.. please share the info.. we are at GOOD time, to plan well for the 2011 outdoor season..

thanks.
