Titan controls timer getting warm

Z

Hey guys I have been using the cheapo heavy duty timers for years, but they have been getting pretty warm, which worries me about fire.

I picked up a titan controls 1 light timer rated to handle a 1000 watt light, which plugs directly into the ballast. It's basically an IEC cord with a timer in the middle.

So I hooked the thing up and the timer box gets warm.. Is this supposed to happen?? I feel like I just wasted 60 bucks trying to fix something that isn't fixable, or wasn't anything to worry about in the first place.

Anybody familiar with titan controls light controllers? Do they usually get warm?

I'm guessing you bought a Titan 4?

I've always wondered about those. Having relays seems like they would be safer. Not sure about them getting warm. It is 1000w. Hot, would be bad, not sure about warm.

I've run 1000's on Titan 8 timers for years now. No issues.

The Titan 4 seems like a better choice. I'm no electrical expert, but your timers are better than what I use, and I've had no problems.

I would think you'll be good to go.

Next time you spend that much on a timer, consider an Intermatic.

Yeah it's an apollo 4. I have seen those intermatic timers they would have actually saved me a couple bucks. I can always return the one I got, but don't those things have to be hard-wired?
The apollo 8 timers are more like what I had been using. The plug gets hot enough that you don't want to keep your fingers there long. That doesn't happen with the Apollo 4. The plugs are all cool, but the timer box is a little warm.

Yes they have to be wired, but if you can operate a screwdriver, it's simple, and how to diagrams are all over the net.

I gotta' think those Apollo 4's are good timers.

Hey man I appreciate the feedback it does have a 3 year warranty so I'll keep it around. I"m sure if something is wrong it would go within that time.
