I am making a tincture right now using the 'Green Dragon' method. Which is: chop buds, heat in over briefly, add to ethanol in water bath.
The recipe I read, was 1/8 (3.5g) in 2oz (60ml). And the final product was reduced to 1 oz (30ml)
From here on out, I am using metric.
So this is what I did.
Starting with: 73 of Bubba Kush. I was very busy this summer and didn't manage a grow well enough, and had some waste buds that are great, but did not look good (yellowing, bleaching, thin). Otherwise, its good stuff.
Purchased 2 750ml bottles of 150 proof everclear. I can't get the 190 here, which is ideal.
I should have taken picture of the whole process, but didn't want to get my camera sticky....
1) Chop buds up (drier the better). I used a cutting board and a knife.
2) pre heat over to 325 (f)
3) line cookie sheet with foil
4) spread buds out over cookie sheet
5) put in over for 5 minutes, mixing them around halfway through
Meanwhile....
6) put 2 mason jars in hot water, half full with alcohol and heat up as close to 160f as possible.
7) take buds out of the over. the whole house will smell amazing....
8) add to alcohol, top off jars, and turn up the heat, simmer for.... ?
It is pretty easy to keep the temp below 175. At my elevation, ethanol boils off at a much lower termp so at 150 it is boiling.
9) You strain it, with coffee filters. If you took organic chemistry, you know how to make a nice cone out of filter by folding it.
I will not strain mine immediately. I am going to test it, and see if it needs more reduction. In the mean time, the jars will sit in a dark closet.
My ideal concentration is 1ml per medium dose.
I plan to use this for cooking, so you can know exactly how many doses you are putting in and for direct tincture. Excess will be sold at one of the dispensaries in town.
The alternative method is to just put the buds in alcohol, and sit for week. I must say, the final product is better. I have done this before. The long extraction tastes amazing, just like the buds smell.
ummm here are pictures... why there is no thumbnail I have no idea... help?

EDIT:
Safety Concerns.
Ethanol is flammable, especially when in its vapor form. The water bath should introduce enough water vapor around the ethanol vapor that ignition is unlikely.
Also, I used an electric stove, and kept the exhaust fan on high the entire time.
I am wondering if I was inhaling some vapors as I checked on the temps and stirred it (the mixture was very thick). My face is kinda numb....
