Timer troubles

Hello, I'm looking for pointers.

I've got 3 1k watt hps lights (2 mag, 1 digi) each on a designated 20amp circuit. I've been using intermatic HB113 20a appliance timers and recently noticed some foxtailing going on and this am I entered the grow room and apparently 1 of the timers hadn't been switching off.

I called intermatic and talked to a technical rep that told me that the lights were pulling to much for the timers and the contactors were sticking or fuzing. I informed him that the knob wasn't hard to turn and maybe the trippers weren't long enough to engage the teeth of the switch/knob. Didn't matter.

He said that i needed a different timer (a TN311) and that it was actually cheap than the current timers I'm using. The call ended with a thank you and I hit the web..... The intermatic TN311 is a 15amp $10 cheapie!

So my question is should I switch to a hard wired mechanical timers or a grow light controller? I dont know shit about light controllers, thinking mechanicals may be easier.

Looking for the plus's and minuses or people's experiences. Never ran more than a 400w ballast, never had these problems before. Thanks for the read!

One advantage of the digital timers - if the power goes out, their clock doesn't get fvcked up.

The cheap Intermatics ... one power outage and your very bright light can be blazing away at 2 in the morning.

True but I have a whole house generator with a digi auto switch over. NO power outages here!

In the event of an outage the lights usually barely dim, sometimes the smart tv reboots but not always. Life goes on with what sounds like someone running a mower in the back yard.

It's nice, came with the house, I recommend everyone have one. Lol
