throwing out / selling a used carbonfilter? Any risc?

Well as topic says.. you think there any risc with this?

I guess the reall question would be.. the carbon itself..
could anything be detected in that?

so are you looking to buy, or sell a used scrubber?
either one doesnt sound very appealing to me. i personally wouldnt bother with it, nor would i ever buy a used one.

why not ask your hydro store if they take the old canister from you. Maybe they ship them back to the manufacturer.
I know that with co2 tanks is that way, it may work for the filter can. Good luck, I was wondering that myself today.
I'm going to call my hydro store or the maker if the store wont take them.

The best you can do is cut the thing open, remove the carbon (you can use it to advantage on soil), flatten the container and then it's just a bit of mashed up aluminium

The filter is worthless and is best cut up before you part with it

now what im wondering is if, just activated carbon could be purchased. then you could find a way into that old filter, and replace the carbon in them. the filters i have are quite well constructed, but im sure i could find a way to drain/refill them when theyre done.

you can but it isnt really worth it considering work and cost of just new carbon dosent differ that much imho .. otherwise its just open it and replace the carbon-pellets inside with new.

(to get rid of it isnt a problem but its fairly new and .. well just throwing out be a little wastefull)

there have been threads here where people do just that..why buy another metal cage and just throw the one you have out? thats silly.

that is silly if you ask me too, thats just a waste of perfectly good materials.
work? how much work could it really be? drill some fatty holes in the top drain it and refill it. cap the holes with some rubber plugs and youre set. i actually think i may give it a go this next time.

i also read somewhere on here that walmart now sells activated carbon. if so thats highly convenient.

new carbon isnt that cheap.. to be worth it really, atleast not the ones ive found. I would imagine most larger growshops has it. Ans activated carbon is probobly found someplaces ealse.. (moonshine making?) :D

ebay carbon... expensive? maybe to a hobo..

much cheaper than a 150$ dollar scrubber. 30$ and you could fill 2 or more 8x26s easy...

My carbon filter comes with a removable top that is held in place by 4 screws. It was designed so you can replace the carbon yourself. Its quite cost effective too... you can find bulk on ebay for a decent rate.

tangential as hell, but several folks have mentioned it here - have you guys noticed any difference in effectiveness of cheap-o ebay carbon for air filtration vs non-cheap-o activated carbon?

reason i ask is the only experience i have w/ the order-a-5-gallon-bucket-of-cheapo-carbon was for filtration on a fish tank, and i absolutely noticed a difference - that crystal clear water side effect of new carbon lasted hours instead of weeks - just wondering if the same holds for air filtration

I bought a bucket off ebay a couple years ago, it was a 5gal bucket for about $70 or so plus shipping. I made a really good copy of a can filter with about 30lbs worth of the activated carbon, no leaks, and pushed through by a 6" vortex on a speed control.

This was for a cabinet holding six girls, and it lasted about two weeks, then I needed to spring for a Can 33.

The cost of a filter, even with high shipping costs is still money well spent. Odor control is worth every penny if you need to worry about it.

My next experiment will be to empty the carbon, put it in the oven on clean cycle, and see if it burns off the clogged pores. Could swear I'd read that that works, and extends the life of the carbon. But could never find that site again.

its in the fish section but last i checked you would go broke cause they only sell small volumes (1 lb?) at a time..i think its about 5 bucks..

i must say..this isnt quite on topic of carbon, but on topic of odor..I got one of those lysol sprayer deals, like you see in every nasty public bathroom in the world..it has a preset time switch. set it to spray every 9-18-or 36 minutes..at every 9 minutes, 1 can SHOULD last 30 days..granted i only have 1 plant going, but it seems to do the job, and has the side effect of making my place smell awesome
