I think its from dirty scissors and dip and grow cloning solution.

the first time I saw this was a mandala's chill om grown from seed. this time I'm really perplexed since it this one came from clones. the strain is Red Leicester Tease. I cut about 16 clones and one amazingly displayed the bud deformity on its main cola.

any clues on why this is happening?

I've only seen that deformity pictured in the old seed bank catalog from the 80s by Neville. Want to say it was on a Early Pearl x Skunk #1 plant. I would be interested to know why this occurs myself.

it could be bacteria, but it could just as easily be a virus, a genetic mutation, insect damage can make it start to happen or many other environmental factors - so it is unlikely that the cause is anything you could blame yourself for.

never actually seen it in cannabis but have seen it happen in many other types of plant occasionally.

i wouldnt worry about it too much unless it is happening to more than the odd plant. perhaps sterilize your tools and keep an eye out for insect damage at the stem tips which may cause it to happen.

From my understanding genetic mutation is a myth as with genetic drift for example. For instance, A toe nail is a toe nail and can't mutate into something else as the genetic code is in the DNA.
Its more likely an environmental factor or chemical imbalance.
Also cuttings taken from old mothers can have defects due to them being under artificial lights for so long which the plants never evolved to.

hi jedi, if genetic mutation was a myth then we'd all still be bacteria or some other primordial single celled organism. Mutations do happen in plants that will change them, but it is rare. in roses, for instance, this may be called a 'sport' - where a branch on a rose will be different in some way from the rest of the plant. if the mutation is desirable then it may be used to make a new rose by grafting etc. The vast majority of mutations will not be desirable
'supersweet' sweetcorn was the result of genetic mutation experiments where germplasm was irradiated with radiation to cause the mutations.
not sure where to start with your toe nail example... but i imagine toe nails evolved from claws - over millions of years. the driving factors in evolution are genetic mutation and natural selection.

all that said, i agree it is more likely to be an environmental factor.

in some plants, single recessive genes have been identified as causes of Fasciation, but these were clones so we can count that one out

Maybe thats a triploid or tetraploid (polyploid) mutation. Could be from the old time when some people (not mentioning any names here on the board) were messing around with Colchicine.

But these are clones so not very likely it will be this. Best bet would indeed be Fasciation.

Cancer is the result of genetic mutations, so sorry but genetic mutations are far from a myth.
