Things needed for indoor growing

That really depends on your method of grow theres many different options. But basically some kind of light source, air movement, medium, ferts.

That size sounds good for a 400w but you'll need fans to vent heat out. how much height do you have?

Dude. Screw the .4kw. Get a full KW HPS in there. If you want to go soil, you can fit 9x15 gal in there. You'll need a fan and a small A/C, especially if you want to run CO2. You'll need about 13.5 cu.ft. of soil. I would set up a seperate area with a .25kw MH for veg. That will bump up the size of your exhaust fan. You'll need a carbon scrubber to keep the stink dow. If your exhaust fan is big enough, you could rig the scrubber up to this, otherwise, you'll need another fan for the scrubber. A thermostat and a humidistat would be handy. Some fans for circulation would be great. A sulfur burner would help with mold and powder mildew.

1. How much money do you have to spend?

2. What are you trying to achieve here?

I am actually on my first grow outdoor, i would say a budget of around $500.00.
I'm trying to grow my own high quality cannabis to smoke for personal use. i am not trying to harvest a very large quanity of buds.

Hmmm...500 bucks with that much space can get you some good buds. If I were you I would go with a 400 watt hps light for flowering and a 250 watt mh light for veg.

A list of things you need:
-White spray paint or mylar reflective material
-Pesticide to spray down the inside of your grow chamber (you want to be safe from bugs, it's better to be safe then sorry later in your grow)
-Pots (get the biggest pots (like say...10 gallons and immediately start your plants in those, that way they will develop a big root mass and grow huge!)
-ventilation (go with a 265 cfm squirrel cage fan and have it vent through either a store bought or home made carbon filter)
-lighting (400 watt hps and a 250 watt mh)
-I'm probably forgetting some stuff, like an invite to me to come over once your harvest is done, but I'm sure other people will give advice too.

*edit* no matter what size light you put in there (400 watt is small for that space, I'd go with 2 400s personally) but make sure you have enough ventilation. Otherwise that is a fire waiting to happen.

Can you split the cab into two sections, one for veg, one for flower. Then go with the 400HPS and a 250MH, vent the cab. Is smell going to be a problem? If so, you will need a carbon filter. With 9 feet of heighth you should be able to use the top for veg and the bottom for flower. Some will say to go with HPS on top cause of heat, screw that with a decent vent system. You'll find your self moving more plants around in veg than in flower. So instead of breaking your back just flower on the bottom. Oh I'm assuming your growing perpetual. sorry too many :joint: rambling. Check out pics of cabs. you can get the 400 and the 250 for for a little over $100, spend a few bucks on a good fan and carbon, tweek the cab for temps. Then on to the grow stuff. Pots, dirt, ferts, seeds.

Pics??

your going to need a bit more than 500$ probably like 8.

air cooled 400w light = 300$
200cfm exhaust fan/ air ducting = 200$
soil/pots/nutreints/hydroponic sytem = 75$ - 400$
misc. crap like weatherstripping, paint, plastic, extensions cords, timers, ect.= 100$
a good strain = 25$+

if you start in soil, start in a 1 gallon containers and transplant when they get rootbound, if you start your plant in too big of a pot it will concentrate on rooting and not growing.

First thing I thought of was a ph meter

First thing I thought of was a ph meter

Definately put a good ph meter on the list. I think you should get a budget 1000 watt light plus grounded timer. I prefer metal halide if you are using just 1 light. (hps growers will hate me for saying that) To keep plants vegging just get a 4' shoplight with a couple of cool white tubes. Hide this in another room and you would not have to partition the main room. The shoplight and bulbs are about $12 at Lowes/Homedepot. You can get used containers from your local nursery. You may have to give them a few dollars. Mix your own soil. Check out my soilless recipe in the forum: indoor grows - soil. The thread is: tell me your light soil / soiless recipe!. I put alot of other helpful hints in that thread. Purchase cheap seeds like $15 a pack of the nirvana type. You can mix your own nutrients or purchase ready made like 20-10-20 peatlite/soilless fertilzer by peters or masterblend using the internet for $20 a 25 pound bag plus shipping. You will need a gram scale for weighing the fertilizer. You can cool the area by leaving the door open or cut a hole in the ceiling and put a fan there. I found a discontinued fan at walmart for $4. Once you have assembled the basics, you could add CO2 injection or some other fancy addition like a roll of mylar with your remaining money.

I agree with everything he said but this one. If you are low budget, 10gal pot to get a male seems like a waste of soil...

Sounds like you are on the right track. My square pots are 7x7x12 (2.5 gallon) and I get about an ounce per plant, but mileage varies with strain and set ups.

BTW, this is an expensive hobby.

My budget was around $500, but then I got the "well, if im doing it, im doing it right" attitude and spent more and more to make this easier and a better experience.

Id say including all materials, fuck ups, redos, and everything, my first grow (link in sig) netted 6 ounces and cost me about $1200

My second grow, only cost about $75 so far. :D

Yeah I agree with jumbly on this one.... It could end up costing you way more.... I didn't even go all out, I cheaped on my reflector, my bulb, and couple of other things to build a cab and still spent close to a 1000.
Still not done either..
I wouldn't use a 400 in a 5x4 space unless it was on a mover or something... I'm in a 3x3 right now and I find at the edges not near enough light gets in.... Go with 2x400 and a good exhaust fan or 1 600 or a 1000...

Don't be a douche. You can get fairly close to your budget (you are going to go over) if you shop here.

Trust me. Get a 1000w HPS for bloom and a 250w MH for veg. Do soil and get a kick ass ventilation set up going. If you get a solid set up, you should be pulling around 2 elbs every 3 months or so with lots of popcorn and shake for hash. With a 9 ft. cieling, you could do 2 levels. 1 area for a few T12's for clones, moms, and a 250wMH for veg. 1 Area for bloom. 3 ft. high for the veg/clone/mother area and 6 ft. for the flower should be just fine if you do it right. Or cheap it and feel very fortunate to get one elb. every 4 months with a smaller lamp. Start looking for a good clone so you don't have to worry about male plants.
