Let me start by introducing myself. My handle is @theBeaver. I am a genuine old fart. Nixon was president when I graduated high school. When I first started growing in the ‘70s, the only grow advice I got was from High Times.

Fast forward to the present. I have a 4x4 tent with 700 watts of LED lighting. I have a Grassroots 46”x46”x18” bed filled with Coots mix and recycled soil. Irrigation is supplied by a BluSoak dual manifold system that is gravity fed from an elevated Rubbermaid tote. I make my own compost and earthworm castings. My goal is to create a bed of living soil and to utilize no-till growing methods.

This is my second run with the Grassroots bed and the BluSoak irrigation. It is also my second run growing sativas. My last grow was Thai from Ace seeds. I could not control the three Thai ladies during stretch and they quickly over-ran my tent. It was a big learning experience for this old fart!

I am currently running Durban Poison. They are from white label feminized seeds. They were sprouted in 1 gallon pots using recycled soil. Five seedlings sprouted on Oct 3 and 4. They were under 18/6 lighting.

Here is a picture of my five Durban Poison girls at 12 days from sprout.

I transplanted the five DP girls into 2 gallon fabric pots on Nov 8th. I used recycled soil that had been re-amended. This was so I could give my Thai ladies time to finish flowering.

I transplanted my Durban Poison ladies into the 4x4 tent grow bed on Dec 4th and put them under 18/6 lighting. On Dec 17th I changed the lighting to 11/13.

Here are pictures of my Durban Poison ladies taken today, Dec 28th. They are at 11 days from flipping to 11/13.

I am pretty much a novice when it comes to all the new growing techniques for cultivating cannabis, so I welcome all comments, and especially suggestions!

Welcome Beaver. I'll follow along. I've been reusing my soil for awhile now. Looking good but I might give then a little more food. Also remember those wood chips will steal N from the soil so you'll need to compensate for that. My best advice would be to get a cover crop going. They look great though. Keep it up.

Thanks for the reply @PadawanWarrior. I tried to get a cover crop going, but the I think the soil surface was too dry to germinate. I'm thinking I'll try it again.

I created a strain called Big Beaver Indica so use another name.

No problem. I think the cover crops really help keep the soil alive. Having roots always present seems like a good thing. I feel like my soil has been better since I incorporated cover crops.

My last grow had 6"+ internodes. This is looking much better.

Hey there @PadawanWarrior. I agree on the cover crop. I planted some barley seeds yesterday that I had on hand. And I also started a dozen petite marigolds to plant in the grow bed.

I did quite a bit of shaving the ladies legs this past week. I am also attempting to get a cover crop going. Barley and some white clover going so far. Kind of sparse at this point.

Its a really nice project. Your SOG is textbook. Your plants are well trained. Plus they have those healthy praying leaves of perfect color. They clearly love your soil.

I have trimmed lots of fan leaves to improve air circulation. Maybe I should do more?

Time for an update.

Day 36 of 11/13, Durban Poison, ScreenOfGreen - No more stretch. Starting to bulk up a bit.

Here is one of the bigger buds, With a close-up of the top.





I am trying to get some plants growing on top of my soil bed. I've got white clover, barley, some kind of squash I transplanted out of my worm bin. And I have some petite marigolds I started as companion plants to help try and keep pests away.

I had some problems with the reservoir on my Blu-Soak system. It is a gravity feed about 4 feet above the soil level. I had installed a filter outlet and it plugged up. It took be a few days to figure it out. I kept increasing the flow from the Blu-mats (like a dummy!) I took out the filter and now I need to get my Blu-mats dialed in again.

The smell is getting stronger, but I am having trouble recognizing it. It's kind of like an astringent smell with woodsy tones. My partner thinks it's more of a petroleum smell.

Thanks for your interest in my Durban Poison grow @Chevy cHaze! I've wanted to grow it for a long time, and finally purchased some white label seeds since I was unable to locate any good breeders of DP. I took clones of all 5 of my ladies in the hope of getting a keeper...

I had it in the 90s and still think highly of the strain! Then a bit in Amsterdam in the late 90s durban looked like hedge clippings but psychedelic up! Smoke. Very nice.
Had some crosses of it in the meantime but never the real thing.
