I saw where a local football team had to lose their name 'Warriors' to satisfy the local native american population. since when does the term warrior represent those early americans.
tbph I checked all the online dictionaries and none of them associated native americans with the word warrior.
I used to not think of "redskin" as a racial slur, until I spent some time working in Southern Utah and heard a few of the locals refer to the navajo as "redskins".... it had the same bitterness and hate as any other racial slur.
IMO having a team named the Washington Redskins isnt much different from the LA Niggers or San Fran Chinks...
Im not saying they should have to change their name, its just unfortunate they were named that in the first place, perhaps when they took the name it wasnt the slur it is considered today, words and theyre meanings do change.
How appropriate that the Redskins team resides in the city that issued the marching orders to kill most of the natives off and then threw the rest onto reservations to rot.
Something quite twisted about that.
If people want the named changed it should come from the fan base or people. The world is on fire and there are major domestic issues, but our band of tyrants is fiddle fucking around with sport's teams names and the people are quite happy to engage in such trivialities while remaining willfully ignorant to the wider world.
I take pride in being called a rebel or redneck. It's my heritage so why run from it.
Having said that, I was raised in an Indian community in my younger years. Many there didn't care for the "redskin" characterization. Some thought the others made to much of it. It was a slur used against their ancestors and people outside their community that never sat well with them. It's no different than the slurs to characterize many other races or nationally of people.
so now anyone can print a redskins shirt and not be officially licensed. Cool, I want an Art Monk jersey. eBay used to be great - throwback illegal knock off jerseys for 30 bucks. Now the closest on Amazon is 130.
They might change their name but I don't know. Maybe to the Washington Generals, USFL style name. USFL should be in italics like wild. So many great players played in the USFL. I'm high.
Maybe they could change the name that represents the town best. But somehow I think the name The Washington Do Nothings or The Washington Finding A Way To Fuck The Citizens would never fly.
I've been a Redskins fan my whole life. I've never heard "redskin" used in a negative way, although I know it used to be. My last gf was 100% Native American. She didn't think it was offensive either.
I guess if it offends anyone now, it's going to change. I'll still be a Washington fan if they change their name.
I live in Arizona born on an Apache Res. and there is some old fam friends from the Res. on facebook that don't like the name , pissed the apaches off and they will scalp your ass or worse. bUTt other than my one random faimly on FB friend I don't see a lot of protest out here. And we have more reservations in AZ than any other state
so...depends who you ask, ask redskins fans they say keep it of course, but its not offending fans its offending N.A.
it will most likely be changed soon, the internet has the momentum, the cause is being rallied,
and the internet has toppled governments in the mid east, donald streling, etc. etc.
You can't call them the Miami Dolphins. Dolphins are like really smart animals. They are basically humans. You also can't call them the Miami heat. "Heat" sounds so hot. Why don't we just call them the Miami "temperature neutrals."
