The Tiger's New Den

Some of you may remember my 'Potty Time' room that had to be pulled right after I got it all together, but now I'm back :D Never let 'em keep ya down!

Here's the new setup (pics have been color curve adjusted to eliminate HPS shading, I'll put up a tutorial on how to do that soon, it's really easy!)

Design

Air handling and electrical room. you'll notice the vapor wall to the right.

This is where the Second HPS will go, gotta get a bulb :bat:

View opposite of above

The closet in the pic above is the Mom/veg area, being used for seedlings now until I get better lights in there.

And the most important part of a new room? The Canaries, of course :) Yes, there are multiples in one bucket, yes, they're stretching like crazy under the HPS, and no, I don't care :) They're bagseed, I've got 100s for just this purpose - to die :) They get minimal care, germinated in the pots, and 12/12 from seed. If they thrive under those conditions, then I know the room is safe for the better genetics, and I get 'bonus bud'. If they die, then they did thier job :sasmokin:

If you'll look directly above where that's written, you'll see why - no sprouts in that pot! That pot had 4 seeds, just like the others, but all of them failed to germ :D

Just illustrates the vagaries of bagseed.

As far as them stretching for light: That's a 1kw they are sitting under, and I actually left the light too low after doing some work in there, and bleached 'em a bit. :pointlaug

They're doing the 'Seedling HPS Stretch' - seedlings stretch like nuts when germed under HPS.

Ah, I see. I have 3 bagseed just breaking the surface.

I kept them for a reason and since I am out of any decent genetics a I really had no choice.

I gather your light is not cooled-I can get my seedlings pretty close to my 250 but I have a shielded air cooled hood. And as far as the strectch is concerned-so what-if you have to stake-no big deal really.

I shall watch with interest. We are at the same stage of developement.

Heh, I wasn't putting down bagseed, I've had some great plants off of it, just pointing out an interesting example of why you can't trust bagseed like you can cared for seeds.

The light is indeed air cooled. The problem with getting it close had nothing to with temps, it's that the 1000 throws so much light you run into what's called 'light bleaching'.

I actually wasn't planning on updating the status of the canaries. Only updates I was planning were when the room was finished out. Got better fluros for the veg closet yesterday, today I'm planning on getting the bulb for the second 1kw. I'll probably update once I have it fired up, and the white poly on the floors, but other than that, you won't see any more shots focusing on the canaries. I'll probably catch a shot of them at harvest, but the only other time you're likely to see them is in the background once I get the SWT 13's fired up nect week, and start a log on them.

Besides, it won't be much of a comparison - your girls will be properly cared for, my canaries are 12/12'ing straight outta the ground, and will have minimal attention. Besides watering, probably the only attention they'll get is yanking
out the males (and that's to protect the SWT girls that'll be in there), heck, they won't even get repotted.

But, if you swing by the SWT13 grow thread when it's up and running and remind me, I'll get you some shots of the canaries.

Hey there NT,

Im lookin for a cool tube solution an seen another thread bout the hurricane shades. you said you never had any probs? have you used the same shade all the time?

I dont know if these things are toughened in anyway or of they are just used for ornamental being from craft shops.. and its just the design thats the same as the orginal hurricane lamp? whats been your experience? are they solid/

and I was wondering if you could tell me what size ducting you are using, how big is the hurricane shades diameter at the ends? in the pic I see a reducer there as well....

and lastly if I'm not pushing it.. what type/capacity of fan are you using? how much air does it pull through? does it have a real obvious impact on the heat?

I am tossing up between this and a aircooled ducted shade

thanks
Treb

No, I don't believe the shades are strengthened in anyway, just your typical glass. nothing particularly heat resistant about them, other than the typical qualities of glass. I've had no problems with the glass caused by heat, even when the fan is off or disconnected.

However, as far as sturdiness, there is a bit to be desired with the hurricane shade's resilience. The one time I've had a problem is when I was working with my chain system, and it got away from me. The tube hit the ground, right on it's lip, then the heavy bulb struck it from the inside. Crack! Didn't shatter, or 'explode', just put a big crack in it. I went ahead and replaced it, because heating and cooling is going to exacerbate that fault.

Of course, that's a plus on the side of the hurricane tube. no visit to the hydro shop, no big deal at all really. Just ran down to the Michael's five minutes from me, and $6 later my cool tube was back up and running.

So, I've had no problems from the shades from normal use, just from an ID-10T error :pointlaug

The Tube is ~5" at it's opening, narrowing to just under 4" at the neck. A 4" connector fits it perfectly, as you can see.

In my case I'm using a 6"x4" reducer, so, obviously, my ducting is 6". This is reduced by and 8"x6" reducer attatched to my 8" 747 cfm Vortex fan.

As far as air volume pulled through, I can't say precisely, but it's enough that if I run the fan at full speed, it'll try to suck in my shirt if I get too close to the end of the tube :yoinks:

I don't run the fan at full speed, I use a homemade fan speed controller, because if I run it at full speed in my current setup, it's very loud, and it cools the room too much, and kills my RH.

As far as heat, it makes an extraordinary difference. Running 1 light without cooling will heat my area to 120+ degrees in under 2 hours. With my setup, I can run two 1kw lights and temps stay between 73 and 76 degrees.

I've never used the ducted shades, but I've got to give a big  to air cooled lights - the best investment in your garden, bar none. For the money, even compared to homemade ducted shades, the hurricane tube wins.

Also, as far as cooling, I'd like to point out that I'm running 1kw lights, and my biggest concern with how close I get my light isn't heat, it's light bleaching. I can hold the cool tube in my hand, no problem.

hey hey Dopest! Long time no see bro!

Yep, since the landlord geeked on me right as I got my last setup ready, I made sure when we were house hunting to find a landlord that was very absentee, and had space.

So, no more bathroom conversions, got much more room, and firing off 2kw this go 'round, with a full mom/veg closet. I just added the finishing touches to the room today, so I'll put up some final pics later, either tonight or tomorrow. Then, tomorrow, I'm germing the nice beans, TRC's Sweet13 (Sweettooth x X-13). While they veg out, I'll get the recirc buckets set up, then we'll be in for some fun!

Also, this is just a temp setup, this place has an old garage that can't be used as a garage anymore. Going to be building that out, and I'll have a thread here in GRD&E following that build out. Going to be making a space for some serious trees  Seperate subpanels, buckets will be plumbed into the house mains, and we'll have 10-11' ceilings - yeah baby!

Here's the promised update:

Split Ducting for the second HPS

Looking through the zipper from the Air/Electrical area into the room, both HPS fired up

From inside the room looking back toward the zipper

The Veg closet, covered

Veg Closet, uncovered

What's inside the veg closet? Why, more canaries of course :D

Ya know you've done right when you're running 2kw at these temps. Gotta pick up a new humidifier today though- Damn thing would get to about half empty then dump all the water everywhere :pointlaug

And for you folks that like to see seedling abuse, here's the canaries

And here's my pups, just cuz :)

I'll be starting the Sweet13s today, since the canaries say all is well with the room. I'll post a link here when I get the grow diary thread started.

:woohoo:

This is still the current setup, until I get the finances together to build the garage out.

Temps hold at 75 in flower room and 84 in veg closet.
