One of my fondest memories of my childhood were the days when we used the regular old directional type tv antenna. For quite a while we didn't even have a rotor to electronicly turn the things.Fine tuning a television station was a job that required at least two people. You had to have one person outside turning the pole with the antenna on it,and one person inside looking at the tv saying "whoa-whoa",or "go back-go back".The pole turner had it sorta' rough sometimes in rainy or cold weather. When we got our first rotor it was amazing. You could turn the knob on the box,go outside, and see the antenna turning by itself! So,we wore out a rotor or two;it was fun!
