Haven't been to the Big Titties for a long time. That tri-state area around Yellowstone is God's country.

Yellowstone may be God's country but it smells like Dante's Inferno. The Tetons are spectacular but I gotta agree with John Muir, it's all about the muthafuckin Sierras (actual quote).

Pops-

I got lost in the Grand Tetons a long long time ago! The year was 1984- and yes I have read George Orwell!! August. I was on Summer break from Indiana. The drive out to Wyoming is a huge one from IN. I wandered away from our campsite in the area called Alaska Basin on the western side of the Tetons. My intention was just to go take a look and possibly take a photo....... I never saw our campsite again! I wandered for miles and miles and spent a night totally lost- sleeping in the trees! A forest ranger from Driggs Idaho met me the next day and took me to his lodge pine home! He and his wife gave me a meal of scrambled eggs and grape juice that was the most satisfying meal I have ever had! Talk about hospitality. There are good people out there!

It's a delicate balance between security and freedom.

Having a government that is comprised almost exclusively of WASP's (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants) throws that balance out of whack. Whether a politician claims to be a Democrat or Republican is inconsequential.
Every American politician has the primary purpose of furthering their own finances, power, and ideas, usually at the cost of the populace they were elected to represent.
I don't particularly relish the thought of my interests being represented by a millionaire who has nothing in common with myself other than the fact that we each have 46 chromosomes.

Our constitution is considered a living document open to interpretation. This means that our Judicial branch of government, which was meant to secure a check and balance against the others, has mutated into a hideous entity that bends and re-defines our constitution to suit the political whims of its Justices. Don't get me wrong on this point...it's a wonderful thing to be able to change with the times...for instance, Civil Rights, Suffrage, etc. Our problem is that we are serving our governments needs rather than our government serving our needs.

Guns don't belong in everyone's hands. However, they are an imperative part of our security against our own government, criminals, and even wild animals. I'm honest enough to say that I don't know the solution. I just know that extreme measures aren't the answer (ie. gun control or everyone strapped like the wild west days).

Balance....That's what we lack...That's what we need.

Uncola, I lived for 25 years in Indiana an hour away from Indy. There is some pretty scenery around Brown County state park, but I miss the mountains of my native Idaho. The area where Montana,Wyoming and Idaho meet is one of the most spectacular areas I have ever seen. Only problem is that it gets colder than my ex-wife's ass there in the winter.

Wow- graduated from HS on the North side of Indy. I went to IU Bloomington for a while- After getting my BS degree. Southern Indiana is pretty sweet. We did a trip or two down in the Hoosier National Forest! I have also been down to some of those State Parks. - Spring Mill State Park? I love those forests!
Ha- I had to laugh about the Ex-wife joke.
The Denver air can get pretty cold- Last December we got buried under 30" of snow- It about killed my rose plant. That was the month my crazy room mate left. I aborted my last grow because of her. She scared the hell out of me.

Lived in Bloomington 13 years and got 2 degrees there. Loved the bass and bluegill fishing there, but I will take trout fishing in mountain streams anyday.

The best trout fishing I ever experienced was when I wasn't the one fishing. While in Colorado's Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness with some friends, We camped at Lost Man Lake. In the space of about 30 minutes- They caught 6 trout that became our dinner. Yum Yum! This lake is also the highest place I have camped in North America- possibly anywhere. I have also camped in South America- (Chile) and spent nearly 3 months in Nepal. Lost Lake is at about 12,500 feet.

I just feel like firearm companies are just trying to be sneaky and make profits....I do enjoy firearms and all the education...maybe I'm just over thinking.

I wish I could carry a firearm everywhere, as long as people take several safety classes I think it should be allowed, shoot cops do it and I feel like I'm being suppressed by that feeling.

Firearm companies clearly want to make a profit. And why shouldn't they? Unlike cigarettes or soda it's fairly obvious bullets kill people, they have nothing to hide. Sure they'll lobby to keep certain bills from restricting what guns they can produce.

I'm not a NRA member, but like a lot of people have pointed out I support what they do. I firmly believe every child in this country should go through a firearms safety course. It'd be a lot more productive than classes like DARE, and the topic could be covered in a class or two.

While I agree with you that by a right everyone should be allowed to carry a gun. I do wish there wasn't a need. Its sad to think of owning a gun for the sole purpose of self defense. Fucked up times.

When the constitution was written, the citizens could come up with about what the gov. could, as far as arms. That way, the citizens COULD overhtrow an out of control gov.No way citizens can come up with the arms necessary to overthrow. If we followed the original intent, we woud be able to access what the gov. has.

Exactly right, El Smoko. The second amendment isn't about hunting. It's about our ability to protect ourselves from those who would do us harm and from a tyrannical and despotic government.

It's an old adage that the right to bear arms is there so that we may protect the rest of our rights.

As to the NRA, we joined and as soon as we had, we began being bombarded with requests to reup our membership (read send more money)! Then they backed this most recent gun control legislation following vtech. No more money from us.

The second amendment's intent was protection... But it doesn't do that anymore... No matter how many firearms you possess, the government will always have more and bigger and better... And if they don't like your politics, they'll take your arms as a threat, and go all ruby ridge on you... Or maybe waco... or montana... or anywhere else keeping and bearing arms had no bearing on the government's ability to infringe on someone's freedom...

If the Second ammendment... If Gun ownership gave us anything more than the illusion of being able to protect our rights, it would be different... But in these modern times 90% of the legitimate (as in not just rhetoric) reasons to own a gun are recreational, and Many more people own guns to target shoot and hunt, than do 'in case the government gets out of line'...

You mean like outta line,, oh, like a President, lied to his country, declared war, revolked the rights of citizens, and ignored the will of the majority and refused to enforce immagration laws?

like that outta line??

Mark my words - That boy is up to something and it's not kosher.

Well, hopefully we'll never have to find out, but I find that increasingly more difficult to remain optimistic about.

I don't think the solution is to give up those rights or to ignore that responsibility. Perhaps that is the problem, too many people have already given up.

Exactly... All the while being endorsed by the NRA...

I grew up w/ guns.. grandfather collected.. war vet.. everyone hunted.. life was great.. now that i'm a little older and have seen people hurt(hunting accidents, people shot criminally,, domestics).. there's really no reason for a guns to survive (except a minimal part of the overal population in very remote areas) ..

For every person that has "Actually" whipped out a gun in defense and shot a would be attacker legitimatley.. there's how many kids shot, friends relatives shot in.. totally innocent accidents. Sorry but unless its bolt action rifle or maybe in EXTREME remote areas high caliber pistols revolvers make sense.

Most gun guys will admit most people shouldn't own guns.. becuase they dont have the sense.. but will say up and down that everyone should be able to bear arms and that your rights are more important than safety.

criminals get guns from two main places.. sold in store by the manufacturerss supporting the nra or just as often STOLEN from the closets of avid gun lovers.. who have guns (like pistols and semi autos.. you know for fun)... either way the gun manufacturers sold it. it all comes around ...killing in america via accident, domestic or stolen criminal.. it all funds nra and the gov... alot of money in guns.

Most nra guys also take the right to bear arms out of context.. the amendment if read in whole translates to say that the citizens have a right to militias to defend it self from enemies and the gov... well guess what.. the coast guard is a national militia.. and ... what do you think your gonna do if the gov is coming for you? lets get real.. it doesn't even say you have the right to hunt, or do anything.. its all been taken out of context.

So what do we do?? Ban and allow all semi auto weapons /with intent of design to be used in anything other than real hunting. Possibly even only bolt action. Why? because the only people to have them will be hunters.

Pistols? Ban everything except for hunting/defense pistols in states and areas where it is used. Why? pistols aren't used for anything except personal gratification.. or killing human beings.
Any ex military weapon that has extreme value can be kept but with a registration
anything else.. well sorry.. but
What gets done with the guns out there? well make a "window of time" for citizens to surrender weapons.. after this window.. your rights start getting taken away real quick!!

another idea is stopping all manufacturing and importation of the actual ammunition for weapons already out there.

I have this attitude from knowing people personally blinded from hunting, friends that shot themselves, classmates ex boyfriend gun attack, seeing boyz in the day brandishing weapons.. whatever.. its not worth letting the few have there amendment flag waving rights.. there's more important ones to fight here.. like how bout prohibition of marijuana. at least if a kid finds that in your bedroom sock drawer instead of a gun there wont be a spilling of blood.

sorry for my rant... continue slaying bambi .. carry on. ;)

You are right my friend! I lived in California for about 4 years- including one solid year in Yosemite National Park! I spent one Winter in Yosemite Valley and one Summer up at Toulumne Meadows High Sierra Camp. I have also been to the summit of Mt. Whitney-14,495 feet. The Lyell Fork of the Toulmne River. Damn Hetch Hetchy?!?! That nearly broke old John Muir's Heart. A truly euphoric place.

i said the constitution is an historical document because it is. there is no such thing as a "living document", as documents neither breath, photosynthesize, reproduce, or die. that concept is meant to show that the constitution can still change, with amendments added or retracted, and continues to be interpreted. but the 2nd amendment was written in 1789.

something akin to the second amendment today would be giving the citizens public control of the airwaves and cable, as television is the weapon that has left the government with the most power. the kind of social control exercised in a monarchy in the 18th century now rarely requires force--just controlling the news and entertainment to reflect certain "realities" and "values". the gov's military might is very rarely trained on its own citizens nowadays, though h3ad's examples are adequate to show that they will use force whenever they feel the need.

i'll just add that recreational killing is not a right enshrined in the constitution. it is something done by people with inferiority complexes and an Old Testament worldview.
