The Most Outstanding Landrace Strains

G

GroMore

Amongst the known landrace strains, which are the most outstanding in both the sativa and indica categories and briefly why?

Such a confusing variation of Thais, Sth East Asian, Chinese, Africans, Middle Eastern, Afghanis, South American, etc...

Peace,

malawi - african land race sativa

very nice earthy sweet taste, THVC content is huge in this one.

swazi - african land race sativa

most varieties have spearmint, earthy tones but its not uncommon to get strange flavors in pheno's, i've had one that tasted like strawberry.

view my diary for some swazi pics

im growing some mazar i shariff native afghanistan dessert strain, dunno wot its gonna be like yet, should be big yeilds as its a heavy indica.

Mazarisharif landrace would have to be up there for the indica category. Nice smell, loads of resin and potent put you to sleep stone.

For me nothing beats some buds I smoked in 1994 in Indonesia, east java to be exact. I was there visiting family and I went for a ride with my cousin on a scooter down to the river and freely picked from some 3-4 metre tall (20-25 feet) pure sativa that was growing near a river bank. When I say 25 feet I am in no way bullshitting, could have been over that but I dont want to sound like I'm talking shit. The buds were really long and airy, at least a foot long (30cm in my measurement) and smelled like coffee mixed with this oil we use for massaging sick people called minyak kayuh putih or kajuput. ('white oil' smells kinda like Vics but with more ooomph) We dried the buds over a 5 day period, wrapped in paper then hung halfway down the well as the air down there is dryer than the humid air above ground. My cousin picked the river spot because he said there's less seeds in the bud there and it was the best to smoke. Each stick, after drying looked like shit. Needless to say Indonesians dont cure their bud so when smoked it had a very strange taste that had turned to a sour/acrid/aniseed type taste when smoked if you can imagine that. The high was INCREDIBLE! trippy but mainly happy/creative/insightful and it lasted ages. We sat and smoked til the early hours of the morning, him and his friends playing the guitar and me just taking in the beauty of life. I wish I knew what it was, I wish I'd kept some seeds but I was only young and was thinking for the moment. I plan to return next year. Hopefully mu cuz can put me onto some spots again! BTW, sorry for taking the thread off course. It was landrace though so I thought I'd tell my story.

sounds great man, i can imagine that a landrace, grown in the land it aclimatized to, is very good stuff, espesh grown under the sun:joint:

My plans for my trip next year involve a 1 week bike ride through most of the mountain areas of east Java (with my cousin of course for company and legal reasons) to smoke, document and collect seeds from different areas. The only problem with Indonesian sativas is the flowering times because of the countries position directly on the equator. If I get a decent amount of seeds they will be going to Gypsy for sure so that everyone can try growing them though I think they may be very hard to grow indoors. We'll see....

Sounds kickass dawg.

I know, cant wait. One thing I've noticed is a lack of any Indonesian landrace genetics getting round these forums or anywhere for that matter. I must admit Having to wait forever to get a small yield (indoors) aint everyone's cup of tea and most of the people here wouldnt have a chance of getting one finished outdoors (apart from some of the blokes from further north in Australia) but the genetics should be good for hybridization and should also be kept in their original state for posterity. An injection of new genetics into our skunk/northern lights dominated scene can only be a good thing as I see it.

This sounds great, because the plants are probably descendants of the Cannabis the Dutch were growing for medicinal purposes in the 1920s.All the Cannabis that was available in the pharmacies in Holland in that time was grown on Java like the Coca plant.

one of my good friends got hold of some beans that were called "indo-skunk". He grew it out nicely on his balcony and i could easily put that on my top 10 list. it was very well grown though.

Oldbootz,

Malawi is outstanding for sure, did this last season's outdoor grow for my third time...the up motivating high is exceptional like nothing else, perhaps due to the THCV thing and great taste for sure. Should do a thread on this one sometime in the future...
I've only done one version of Swazi from African seeds but lost the beans I bred for some silly reason, darn hugh yielder but the one I did tasted a bit turpentine like so not so great in that department though the smoke was strong and up but quite heavy too...

Grimweeder and Hashmonkey,
I have some Mazar I Shariff from Gypsy but haven't had a chance to put these babies down yet but looking forward to trying just the ten beans.

Mountain monkey,

The indonesian sativas sound amazing! I am surprised they're still growing there considering how tough Indonesia is about weed these days but as Elamanito says the Dutch used to grow it and coca there for the med industry so you sorta gather they were a bit slack about cleaning it up like others were in a lotta places I guess...Your forthcoming trip sounds like the sorta adventure I dream about but make sure you stay safe. I was shocked at how they gave Shapelle Corby 20 years as if she was carrying a load of heroin, a bit over the top.

Great story about Indonesia.
My personal favourite is Ethiopian.
Followed by Swazi and Kullu Jungli, although the jungli isn't ready yet, the plant is BEAUTIFUL.

Thanks Ce, El, GM. I hear GM about the grow scene there... there isnt really one, apart from a few rich kids who have indoor setups and grow in their backyards. If you are related to people in office you can get away with pretty much anything. But large scale growing ins't really a thing there, people just know where to go to grab wild growing buds, seeded or not. One interesting thing is how bud is used in cooking. Certain types of marijuana are added to soups to not only add a high (which your average country folk use to go to help them get to sleep by 8pm) but as a flavouring herb. The more remote the area the more likely you are to come across this sort of stuff. I've hijacked the thread, really sorry but I just cant stop writing when I think of my second home and how long it's been since I was last there. Peace to all.

Mountain Monkey,

No such thing as hijacking this thread bro, it's nice to hear your ramble wherever it takes us, it's all good and an inspiration to anyone truly interested in landrace strains. It sort of gives a background to what landrace really means and gets away from the sterotyped backyard dutchy and hydro scenes. Gotta luv it if you're into landrace!

exactly! this is a forum. Tell us more about this part of the world as there is very little first hand info about landraces from Indonesia and Malaysia..but I've heard good things from Aussie surfers about grass they smoked there.

btw if that bud was dried for 5 ~ 10 days then bottle cured for several months, the high would be noticeably stronger and better. The high from landrace sativas really do improve with a long cure, I believe to a much greater degree than most faster finishing modern hybrids.

The high can develop a separation from one's self or a change in time and place..in a good way! I smoked some African bud once that made me feel I could run a hundred miles carrying a spear...not just feel energized, it was much more than that, it was like that stuff turned me into a warrior ready for anything! some Zamal I grew gave me an altered reality that I've never experienced before, it was excellent stuff..I felt as if I was above myself observing, but felt great at the same time (this is not a sensation you will get from a 8 week flowerer grown under electric lights). I've got a little Zamal x Zamal and one or two Zamal x Nev Haze into flowering now that won't be picked early.

Rural Thais also sometimes cook with ganja in soup too.

Cant speak of hijacking this thread.I'm surprised that Cannabis is still growing in Indonesia, although the drugs law is very strict about Cannabis.Death penalty for a joint is quite tough.

In the nineties i had the chance to smoke some Indonesian buds bought in a coffeeshop. It gave a sativa good high what i can remember.
If you have seeds just pm me.
