Hello Everyone
As a longtime reader of the IC forums and as someone who is in the planing stages of a first time grow I find that the bulk of my time while here at IC is spent right here in the Design & Equipment forum. And as such I would like to help to contribute to the wealth of information available here... so here it goes!
The following is a listing, and an incomplete one at that, of some of the materials and equipment that can be found and used to construct cabinets and grow rooms alike. If I have omitted something or provided incorrect information please let me know and I will make corrections/additions as they are needed.
Note: I am posting this now somewhat incomplete due to the arrival of relatives, a short visit thank gawd..., and also `cuz my little ol `puter desperately needs a reboot. More to come very soon...
Peace &
GG

AC - Air Conditioner, an appliance, system, or mechanism designed to extract heat from an area using a refrigeration cycle.
Aero Cloner -
Aeroponics - A hydroponic technique involving the use of sprayers, nebulizers, foggers, or other devices to create a fine mist of solution to deliver nutrients to plant roots. In many aeroponic gardens, the plant roots are suspended above a reservoir of nutrient solution or inside a channel connected to a reservoir. A pump delivers nutrient solution via sprayer nozzles, which then drips or drains back into the reservoir.
Air Cooled Reflector -
Air Pump - A device used in aquariums and other settings which is able to supply a continuous source of air. Primarily of a piston or diaphragm design and powered by 110v AC power.
Air Stone - A Porous material used in aquariums to provide water movement and aide in oxygenation, aka gas exchange. Available is various sizes and forms, air stones require the use of an air pump to drive them.
B
Ballast - A magnetic or digital/electronic power supply used to drive HPS/MH and Fluorescent lamps as well as well as a variety of other lighting. The older magnetic ballasts tend to produce more heat and also consume more power for a given size then their newer digital/electronic counterparts.
Barb Fitting -
Batwing Reflector - A lighting fixture usually made from metal and finished with a highly reflective surface that is used to direct and concentrate the output of a lamp is a given direction. While sometimes adjustable in the size of footprint created, Batwing reflectors are generally not preferred in growing situations as they lack a means for extracting excess heat created by the lamp; a Cool tube is often employed with the use of a Batwing to allow for air cooling to occur.
Bio Bucket -

Breaker - An automatically-operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit. Unlike a fuse, which operates once and then has to be replaced, a circuit breaker can be reset (either manually or automatically) to resume normal operation.

CFL - A compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), also known as a compact fluorescent light bulb, is a type of fluorescent lamp that fits into a standard light bulb socket or plugs into a small lighting fixture. In comparison to incandescent light bulbs, CFLs have a longer rated life and use less electricity.
Chiller - A chiller is a machine that removes heat from a liquid via a vapor-compression or absorption refrigeration cycle, or in the case of a 'swamp cooler' application via evaporation.
CMH - Ceramic Metal Halide, are a relatively new source of light that is a variation of the mercury-vapor lamp. There is a ceramic tube inside the lamp that heats a mercury-argon mixture creating a blueish light that is close to natural daylight.

HID - High-intensity discharge (HID) lamps include these types of electrical lamps suitable for growing: ceramic metal halide, metal halide, and high-pressure sodium lamps. The light-producing element of these lamp types is a well-stabilized arc discharge contained within a refractory envelope (arc tube). Compared to fluorescent and incandescent lamps, HID lamps produce a far higher quantity of light per unit area of lamp package.
HPS - A High Pressure Sodium vapor lamp is a gas discharge lamp which uses sodium in an excited state to produce light. There are two varieties of such lamps: low pressure and high pressure, of which only the HPS is suited to growing.
Humidistat -
Humidifier - A household appliance that increases humidity (moisture) in a room.

Mogul Base - A Mogul Base is a bulb socket having a larger diameter than a regular light socket (medium base), and is typically made of cast porcelain to resist higher temperatures. Mogul Base lamps are available for industrial use in larger wattages (250-1000) and in halogen, high-pressure sodium and metal halide configurations.
Mylar - Mylar is a trade name for Biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate (boPET), an extruded polyester film which is aluminized to provide a highly reflective 'mirror like' surface which is beneficial in the even distribution of light within a grow space.

Pruning scissors -
Panda Film - A tough plastic film with one side colored white and the opposite side being black, available in various thicknesses and typically sold by the foot or in rolls of 25/50 or 100 feet.
Parabolic Reflector -

Potentiometer - See Rheostat.

PSMH -
PVC -

Recirculating Deep Water Culture -
Reflectix -

Reservoir - A large container used to store and distribute water and nutrient throughout a hydroponics system.
Reverse Osmosis Filter - Reverse osmosis is the process of pushing a liquid through a filter that traps the solids on one side and allows the pure liquid to be obtained from the other side. More formally, it is the process of forcing a liquid from a region of high solids concentration through a membrane to a region of low solids concentration by applying a pressure in excess of the osmotic pressure.
Rheostat - A variable resistor that functions as a voltage divider.
Rock Wool - Rock wool is used for its ability to hold large quantities of water and at the same time maintain a high percentage of air as well. This aids root growth and nutrient uptake. The fibrous nature of rock wool also provides a good mechanical structure to hold the plant stable. Rock wool has a high pH, which is unsuitable to plant growth. This requires correcting or conditioning. Conditioned rock wool has a stable pH over long periods of time.

Thermostat - A device for regulating the temperature of a system so that the system's temperature is maintained near a desired setpoint temperature. The thermostat does this by controlling the flow of heat energy into or out of the system. That is, the thermostat switches heating or cooling devices on or off as needed to maintain the correct temperature.

Vaportek - A trade name referring to an electric device using a scent cartridge system to control oder within an enclosed area.
Velcro - Velcro is a brand name of fabric hook-and-loop fasteners used for connecting objects. The term VELCRO is a registered trademark in most countries. Generic terminology for these fasteners includes "hook and loop", "burr" and "touch" fasteners. Velcro is often used to attach sheets of poly or mylar, mount small pieces of equipment, or to form a closing mechanism for poly or tarp constructed rooms and enclosures.
Vermiculite - Vermiculite is a natural, non toxic mineral (clay), used in growing applications as a soil conditioner which aides in water retention.

Zeolite - In agriculture, clinoptilolite (a naturally occurring zeolite) is used as a soil treatment. It provides a source of slowly released potassium. If previously loaded with ammonium, the zeolite can serve a similar function in the slow release of nitrogen. Cuban studies in the emerging field of "zeoponics" suggest that some crops may be grown in 100% zeolite or zeolite mixtures in which the zeolite is previously loaded or coated with fertilizer and micronutrients. Zeolites can also act a water moderators, whereby they will absorb up to 55% of their weight in water and slowly release it under plant demand. This can prevent root rot and moderate drought cycles.
