No, it's not really caused by mites. Honeybees can suffer from both tracheal mites, and Varroa mites. It is fairly easy to breed resistant varieties to one of these, and the other is often treated with peppermint oil and other natural things. Out here in the desert we use Chapparal. Of course the commercial bee industry just throws antibiotics at the problem.
