The Death of Common Sense

I liked this one:

I am 72 years old. My parents told me about Mr. Common Sense early in my life and told me I would do well to call on him when making decisions. It seems he was always around in my early years but less and less as time passed until today I read his obituary.

Obituary - Common Sense

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be rembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair, and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Aspirin, sun lotion or a sticky plaster to a student; but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar can sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know my Rights, Someone Else is to Blame, and I'm a Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

What do the ten commandments have to do with common sense?

I found common sense quite rare among the people I grew up with. Hell, most parents of kids today are pretty damn dumb.

It's amazing how stupid people are nowdays. I'm not saying I'm the smartest guy in the world, but I've definitely noticed a lack of common sense at my workplace. Not only common sense, but also a lack of initiative. It's no secret that we're all getting lazier(in general), but damn. People seem to lack the COMMON SENSE to think about WHY you're supposed to do certain things, and just do it because it's what they're supposed to do for 8 hours. I'm 24 and I feel like I'm 60. Even people who are 30-35 are becoming annoying & childish to me(not all, but you get the idea). I will no doubt grieve every day for the loss of our good friend Common Sense. I will also pray for Proper Spelling and Independence.

Seems as if maybe everyone is just afraid of each other. This would explain the reason that people seemingly ignore each other, stay on their cell phone wherever they go, and tend to enact ridiculous rules in order to appease those groups who they feel will be offended.

It seems as though people get mentally stuck at some point in their lives that they rarely ever grow out of. The majority of people are stuck at around age 16-19. That's why you have people who are 30, 40, 50 and up still acting like immature teenagers and not taking on any personal responsibility. I know exactly what you're talking about and I am glad that at least you and I won't be wearing our High School jackets when we're 45.

Seems as if maybe everyone is just afraid of each other. This would explain the reason that people seemingly ignore each other, stay on their cell phone wherever they go, and tend to enact ridiculous rules in order to appease those groups who they feel will be offended.

Two seperate things here. People don't ignore each other because they're afraid of one another. People are becoming increasingly self-absorbed. That's why you have so many people, especially in public places like the bus or the library, oblivious to their surroundings and letting thew world hear their telephone conversations. And a lot of the time, those conversations are really things I do NOT want to hear about (example: break room @ work, some chick talking about how she was wondering if the dude she boned the night previous was telling the truth and those really WERE cold sores... no lie) - Personally, I think my generation and every generation afterwards has been raised to be extremely narcissistic through parents and teachers telling them how special they are and how they can change the world and how everyone loves them, etc. When you hear that all day long at school and at home, you go way past loving yourself.

Now, as far as enacting rules as to not offend anyone, that's because in this society we live in, everyone is always on their toes not because they are afraid of other people, but because they are afraid of lawsuits. Remember, some people make a fucking living from suing other people frivolously.

nice post genkisan, that was funny but a bit sad... ok marx2k thats a two fer two. i agree with you. I meet people and I realise that many have just stopped growing or learning as people. most of them left highschool, got a job, got married and their level of education and their lives are stuck at that point in time.

its like a time warp, and they have no further input to their brains but tv an all those bullshit urban myths that they sprout amongst themselve. A meal consists of meat and three types of vegatable stuff and if you dont eat meat yer get cancer... sorry am taking the piss but real stupid playground stories of which I can think of none right now

I know people who can't cook and don't even know the basics of raisng a child (despite having raised 1 or 2) enough to help or teach a daughter raise a grandchild... since when did we forget how to raise kids? Shit my first girlfriend couldn't cook.. though she was good when she tried.... but kids today their parents dont know how to cook so where they gonna learn

it used to be they taught basic cooking at highschool so at least people from homes where they weren't gonna be taught to cook could do something to fend for themselves you know?

but its the common sense... for sure its going going gone

This is my biggest aggrevation in life, the lack of "common sense"& personal responsibility,in people.
It's impossible to even start to explain, this effects every interaction with people,in my buisness.
I'm not going to get started,I allready need to smoke a bowl, just to calm down, just thinking bout this subject.

Its OFFICIAL common sense is now, UNCOMMON SENSE.

Deprive people of their fat, bloated, pampered luxurious North American lifestyle, and let them learn what real hunger and need means, and they'll grow the fuck up right quick.

Too true - very sad. But there are pockets of resistance.

I'm raising my kids to live against this current - plse and thanks, hold the door, expect nothing and be thrilled with anything. Ladies first, women and children first. Give a hand when required, and a fist only when necessary. No-one is responsible for you, but you.

So far, my boys are welcome anywhere, and their friends think I'm "cool", because I take an interest in their lives and actually talk to their friends. I'm not rolling drunk every nite, and I deny myself stuff as much as I say no to them.

It's all in the example - I'm instilling the "European work ethic" that was given to me - and IMHO it makes all the difference.

Can one be taught common sence?

i grew up in a house of non compliance, but i hope my actions say volumes about who i am. not my apperance or family back ground.
