the Chiller Diller Matinee- how to convert a chest freezer into a muti res chiller

heres my latest mad ape invention. Summer is here and I got several projects on different reservoirs and need to battle the heat..(hehe in more ways than one).. :dueling:

either i buy several more of these at $400 a pop or get creative.

if it werent for this chiller this res would be at 80f. a sure death sentence in hydroponics.

take a look at the inside of this chest freezer. that hose has water being pumped on a close loop through the freezer and back into the res..very efficient and I dont know how many reservoirs I could cool with this badboy but i'm sure it will handle all of my needs..

so the water is pumped from the res through the hoses inside the freezer and circulated back into the res. i put this adapter to add some 3/4'' hose which holds a lot more volume of water that will be inside the freezer. put some hose clamps on that cause if it comes undone it might ruin your day.

OK so now we got a very effective way to cool the water now lets talk about temps. If you want to drop your temps fast or are doing a large reservoir put the pump on a cycle timer 5min on/ 15min off. this will allow water to sit inside the hose in the freezer and chill up then get circulated back into the res. when you hit your desired temp undo the cycle timer and let your water flow.

This is very effective and temps are conrolled by the length and diameter of the hose. so heres my caveman formula for raising water temps if they get too cold...simply pull out some of the 3/4'' hose and set it on top of the freezer. do this untill you find a happy medium 60-70f.

hehe I dont know how many reservoirs I can chill with this but it looks like a lot of hose will fit in there and still leave me room to chill my heini's..hehe now I can relax and chill my ro water storage and aero cloners and any reservoir. and they can all be done on different hoses to keep em from inter mixing.

again all the temps will be determined by length and diameter of hose. It takes a little dialing in and its easy to get too cold(below 60f)..if this happens just pull some hose out of the freezer and set it on top to lessen the amount of water thats in the hose in the freezer.

and thats my universal multi res chiller combination beer cooler... :woohoo:

Man that is slick.....But it might/will blow out the freezer compresser cause they and not made to run with a "load" ie a constantly warm something or other. Not constantly running your warm res water thru the freezer will keep it running alot longer.

IMO you would be best to enclose the hoses, cover them in water and let it freeze when the lights turn off and when the lights turn on let the freezer motor rest mabey have it kick on a coupla times during lights on.

Some of those freezers can take a lick'n and keep on tick'n. Ive tortured one for months on end running constantly and it never failed. I finally had to get rid of it just to make room for other things. I guess the best advice is don't use it if you cant afford to lose it.

Very nice BonGorilla! Howdit do threw july and august? I ran a mini fridge a while back with a 5 gallon bukkit in it fulla water, with a coil of hose with nutes pumpin threw it to coolem but it didnt work good for me. It was justa a li'l mini fridge tho. I finaly wound up pullin the guts outta the fridge shell and makin a frame for the comp and coils and dunkin the evaporator into a 50 gal rubbermade with a coil of nutes bein pumped threw it to coolem. It worked for a while but I let it run unregulated and froze over a couple times by accident. It depended on how cold my basement got. It finaly gave out after bout 3.5 months. Like I said tho, mine was just a li'l dorm fridge. So howd yours hold up threw the heat? I bet it works better when it got lotsa beer in it!

You are the Man !!

I have to look into this verses a chiller for some water cooled lights.

Thanks, You may have saved me a bundle.
