The best innovations of 2013

At times, 2013 seemed like a science fiction movie come to life. The new DARPA Atlas bots seemed to be inspired from the “Terminator” film franchise, Stewart Brand’s concept of “de-extinction” seemed to be lifted directly from the storyline of “Jurassic Park,” Motorola’s new “password pill” reminded some of “The Matrix,” and new test-tube food concepts brought to mind earlier “Soylent Green” visions of the future. And, of course, there were the many other nifty gadgets and gizmos that continued to deliver on the promise of a “Jetsons” future. We’ve picked out the trends and concepts of 2013 that seemed to have the most staying power for the year ahead.

The concept of de-extinction is pretty cool, great TED talk on it too. The fact that scientists wanna bring back the woolly mammoth is badass, one of those crazy scientist fantasies.

And to think, I thought the stealth vaporizers that look like a traditional tobacco pipe were the hottest innovation of 2013. Well, not really. I still stick to my trusted bong I bought years ago and have not
invested in smoking innovation.

The thing that caught my attention was how car engines are getting smaller and smaller, but at the same time are pumping out more horsepower. Mercedes, Jaguar, GM, Ford, and even Ferrari have started going smaller with higher efficiency engines that produce fantastic power in half the cubic inches.

Then toss in the cool electric racing cars and racing motorcycles, and we are almost ready for a Tron moment.

3d printed food?

We are moving closer and closer to the matter replicators shown in Star Trek.

Someday we'll be able to tell the computer "burger and fries" and have it appear largely like it does in those old Star Trek episodes.

Just don't ask it to make a cup of tea . . .
