3400 btu is the heat produced from an unvented 1000w bulb. you will need less ac if you have aircooled reflectors.

i would follow the rule just in case...esp if you live in a hot area or there is any chance of an upgrade in the future. i would rather have a unit that is a little to big than 1 that is too small.


i live in a very very very hot & humid area so i am biased towards the high side of the equation, if you live in another type of enviroment you needs may differ.

you could go with a 14.7-15k unit since that is the largest that runs on 120v. & still do ok....
