Hey folks, fist time grower, long time smoker here. Finally got off my ass and made some room for a little garden, in my basement. I had everything set up, conditions were perfect, til I plugged in my 400hp light, and left it alone for 3 or 4 hours, went back downstairs too check it out, and the damn thing burnt out. The ballast is good, and it never tripped the breaker, the bulb just died, I can see little bits of, sodium, I guess thats what it is, inside the bulb. Anyone have any idea as to what went wrong, could the heat from the reflector have cooked it, cause I did have them fairly close together? thanx!

Maybe just a defective bulb? I don't think it was the heat, as the inside of the bulb is burning a hell of a lot hotter than the amount of heat being radiated off the bulbs themselves.

You're still cool. :)

You can keep quite a few seedlings under a CFL or two while your new bulb comes in the mail. :)

Get a CMH :) Philips Retro-White lamp for that 400w HPS ballast and you'll really appreciate it ;)

Good luck and welcome to your new lifetime hobby. :D

If it is a new light just purchased, take it back! Those bulbs have a warranty.

Get a bulb from a hardware store or something to check and make sure the ballast didn't fry your bulb.

what a shame.

Hi LolaGal, thanx fer yer condolances, it is a shame, cuz I bought it driving back from B.C. about 10 hrs away from home. You know, I live in a town with a population of 70-80 thousand, yet I have to drive 4hrs away to get "proper supplies....thats a shame!

Hey bongoie, not sure who made the ballast, it looks well put together. Your right, its not so bad, i'll really whine when I fry my babies, hope not, hey speakin of babies, anyone had experiance with sapphire star, and chemo beans, thought i'd buy the cheapies 1st time out!

Also LolaGal, or anyone else, what kind of "cheaper" bulb can I test the ballast with?

Or you could get a 400 watt MH for emergency use. Sometimes when one fries the other still works. Go to Lowe's or something. $30

So nice to get help from good people, very kind of you, thanx fer droppin by smokingshogun. Sadly the closest I came to finding one, after checking all the harware stores, was a 400 mercury vapor, almost took it, but i'll pick up a couple in Emonton next week...cheers!

Oh, I was thinking he said it was a 400 HPS/MH ballast, sorry..

After re reading, I see it is a HPS ballast right? You have to make sure it's not MH ballast.

You can't switch bulbs, they will blow up on you! If it is HPS get HPS bulb or a conversion bulb for HPS.

Get a CMH :) Philips Retro-White lamp for that 400w HPS ballast ,just make sure its a coil ballast and not a digi, also make sure it's just a hps non switchable type of ballast!!!
