Texas.. New law

Snook

I just saw the governor of Texas (Abbott) say that he put forth a bill that was passed by the Texas senate that would withhold funding of any Texas city that proclaims themselves a sanctuary city and furthermore could impose legal action up to incarceration of any public official that does not comply.. jail time.. even for chiefs of police.. what do you all in Texas hear??

Not a Texan but I dig it.I sure cant fuck up and get sanctuary anywhere. As supportive as I am on states rights I can see where the Donald and others are coming from on this one.Actually they are not stopping the states from having the right to declare sanctuary cities, thecities just wont get support from the Feds if they do.I don't get the big problem with it.The law just states if an person is here illegally and commits a crime, that ICE must be informed. So wheres the rub?

The whole point of sanctuary cities is for illegal immigrants to safely report crimes to police without the fear of being deported. Everyone deserves police protection even if they are here illegaly. imagine if you cant call for help? Abbot wont get re elected dudes in a wheelchair and is against medical mj what an ass and now this. Its not law yet

The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.

Anatole France

the same could now be implied here in regards to illegal immigrants.

Police departments were originally assembled to protect the rich from the poor, that mentality has filtered down a bit over many decades but is still obviously acted upon by them.

I don't understand Rolan, please help me to because I have heard that argument over and over again. What does an illegal working with the police have to do with a person arrested and in jail being reported to ICE?First of all, the illegal alien"I don't like the term"will not be found out to be illegal unless he informs on himself because the police will not confront them on the matter, especially when they are being good citizens. The law states if you are arrested, jailed, and found to be in this country illegally, that it must be reported to ICE.How does that add up if an undocumented gardner or housekeeper wants to inform on a robber or murderer? And its not informing but just cooperating with the local police like you say.Why should they be afraid when the law is explicit? This is for people that have broken the law and are jailed and found to be in this country illegally, not for undocumented folks that abide by the law.I just cannot connect those dots no matter how hard I try.

This is a serious scenario. immigrants are a integral part of Americas identity, we need to watch and share the current trump admin actions.

I can only agree that 'illegal' = not lawful.

But to the point, exactly who are they gonna get to pick the apples? other 'legal' persons wont do it for what that farmer wants to pay. I think the farmers should cut into their profits and pay more/hr and they would get the help of legal workers..

I also believe in assimilation into the local population/society like legal immigrants had/have to do... this isn't Mexico or other countries from which these illegal immigrants came from so why try and change the host society to match the country they are 'escaping' from. In my early biker days, I used to wear a shirt that said "SPEAK ENGLISH OR GET THE FUCK OUT". I could get shot for wearing that today..

I couldn't agree more that immigrants play an important role in our society, whether they got here legally or illegally.I don't like that they may be uncomfortable dealing with their local police, especially since they can be preyed upon easily for that fact.If it were up to me,I would find a way to make all law abiding undocumented people legal.I just don't understand the link between jailed undocumented people being reported to ice,and law abiding immigrants cooperating with LEO.I cant make the connection in my itty bitty mind

...high bro and like you i don't come around much these days, i'm hoping things will settle down some now that Gypsy is free, for too long too many people were being banned for sharing honest opinions, if you weren't a progressive liberal you got shitcanned, ...so i mostly moved on to other sites that were more willing to engage in honest discussion.

...anyway, good to see you bro.

I'm still open minded as to how one affects the other. If no responses you wont hear another word from me.I actually do want to understand what these mayors and police chiefs are saying about undocumented people being afraid of cooperating with LEO because of the ICE mandate.Keep it non political this is a social not a political issue

...in sanctuary cities the illegals commiting crimes are, to some extent, protected so the illegals who are victimized by the illegal criminals do NOT inform the police because they are more afraid of the illegal criminals than they are of the police.

Holy cowshit! An explanation that actually makes some sense. Thanks Liberal Larry. But wouldn't the legal immigrants also be more afraid of illegal criminals and not want to work with the fuzz?10 police chiefs and 5 mayors and it took a stoner to make some sense lol.Officials would never explain it that way because it would put the illegal criminals in a bad light and the sanctuary bullshit would fall apart.I see the light..

similar to chinatown in san francisco in the 70's where lots of crime and many businesses were extorted by other Chinese until the the golden dragon massacre,(which resulted in San Francisco Asian Gang Task Force) i suspect the same will happen if the cartels get out of hand/if it hasnt already come to that point because Trump said he would go after cartels in his speech tuesday.

they have been "going after the cartels" forever now. you cannot "arrest" a cartel, you CAN starve it by cutting off its money supply, somewhat akin to killing a cancerous tumor by cutting blood flow to it.
the USFW folks used to try to eradicate coyotes by trapping, aerial shooting, poisoning, everything you can imagine. know what happened? their birth rate increased, now we have coyotes all the way to the east coast. until they legalize the shit the cartels make money from-ie-selling drugs- they will continue to flourish, i'm afraid.
