Texas Democrat says no jail for pot

HOUSTON, Texas - The Democratic nominee for district attorney in Houston says if elected she won't jail people for small amounts of marijuana

Kim Ogg says she will instead issue citations and enforce community service for people suspected of misdemeanor pot possession. She says two days of picking up litter would avoid a conviction.

Ogg is running against Republican Houston District Attorney Devon Anderson. The Houston Chronicle reported that Anderson released a statement saying she is working on a similar program and agreed that low-risk offenders are straining the system.

Ogg said more than 12,000 people were charged in 2013 with marijuana possession of less than 4 ounces. She told reporters they were then jailed for an average of five days, costing taxpayers $4.4 million.

Except any penalty still signifies ILLEGALITY. Hardly even a baby step.

How about the LEO who makes the useless arrest has to clean up the city for 2 days.?

This is dumb. It still puts a strain on the taxpayer system. Who's going to enforce the citations? Cops...Who pays the cops? Taxpayers...Who enforces the "litter pickup?"...Cops. Who pays for the cops again?.... Taxpayers.

A misdemeanor citation is way better than $2,000 in fines and up to 60 days or 90 in Texas prison system.

I'm not arguing it's dumb, but at the way the tide is turning, I see that most politicians better have gotten on the "pro pot" bandwagon or they must have a purchase path to their next seat, regardless if its local, regional, state or federal. It's going to be campaign killer I believe to MOST seeking office. Not all. I know there is super hard staunch nien on this idea of any type of legalization, er, as the commenter said, STILL ILLEGAL, which it is.

My point is, let these nay sayers jump on the bandwagon and see how far they can ride it. While Houston ever gets to issuing citations (haa haa) that wouldn't last long IMHO. At that point, I think its over anyway. The fat lady sings?

Its going to be a real interesting flip floppin politics in next 24 to 29 months in the USA! Popcorn ready.

Make THAT motherfucker work to pay back the ca$h tax payers WASTE on cannabis arrests.

What in THE fuck does a g'damn POLITICAL PARTY have to do with ANY job in our judicial system?

Justice is SUPPOSED to be blind, NOT a member of some stupid fucking party.
