tempered or not

I recently picked up a hydrofarm sunburst light, and want to add the glass in to make it air cooled (it has everything except the glass already) and I wanted to know if 1/4in normal glass would be ok with a 400w light, or if i need to go with tempered glass?

Thanks, just what I wanted to hear :)

The thought of picking shards of glass out of my girls was giving me nightmares

I may be wrong, but I think all that tempered glass does is break into relatively non-sharp cubes instead of long, dagger-shaped pieces. Glass is still glass, unless it's borosilicate. Then there's fireplace/woodstove "glass" which is actually a transparent ceramic which can be white hot, then have ice water poured over it. Very expensive, though, and not sure how it works with plants/light.

I called my local glass shop to get a price on tempered glass for my 1K light it was like 25 bucks plus tax to have it cut and tempered. Plain glass should only be a couple bucks. I used to frame pictures, have lots of plain glass laying around, so I'll probably just use that.

tempered glass is made so that you can heat it up (like with an HID bulb) and then splash cold water on it without it braking, the main reason for using it with your reflector is because you want to protect your bulb from water so if you use regular glass and it gets hit with water there is a good chance that it will break or crack so its s good idea to use the tempered stuff.

I'm using a cool tube I made from a cheap ($7) glass hurricane tube and with air flowing over it, it only gets warm. I don't think normal glass would be a problem.
