Taking Clones from Mother, Flowering Mother?

Experienced growers, please tell me your thoughts.

1. Grow a plant till it has a large stem, say 3/8 of an inch in diameter, then take clones and move the mother into flower or...

2. Keep the mother plant in a seperate room, always letting it grow and taking clones as needed to veg and flower.. never flowering the actual mother.

The first method always Grows a mother, takes clones and then the clones become the mothers while the Mother is moved into flower...

Which way is best.. and I am wondering if eventually the clones taken from the mother, from method 1. will end up not as viral as the original?

Does this sound like a crazy question?

There is no best way. Just keep your MOM healthy and happy and take cuts. I change MOMs every 2-3 months so they don't get out of control.

whatever best suits your needs. you can keep taking clones of clones. never keeping any one mother for more than a single cycle, or you can keep a single mom for years. both methods work equally well

It's been my experience that flowering mothers creates very dense and more difficult to manage plants. I always start new mothers when I take cuttings for each crop. I hang on to the original mothers until the new cuttings are established. Mothers produce one generation of cuttings for me and they're done. Sad if you anthropomorphise your plants but efficient and consistent.

I hang on to mothers until they are at an unmanageable height. I take anywhere from 20 to 40 clones per mother per cycle so i need mine to be a decent size and density. I hang on to them because it is just easier for me because to take the amount of clones id need monthly it would take about 3 cycles to get a seedling/clone the size id need it to be to meet my demand.

That's a really good point. I only need 7 plants to flower every 12 weeks. Finding a system that meets the need should be the first priority. Still don't think I'd put a mother into flower unless I had to.

I flowered and revgged because this was a special pheno that i didnt take clones of to start with. I ran 100 from seed and found only 1 like this.

They both work but keeping a genetic preserve let's you take the best tops every time. I don't like to take the tops off my veggers unless they have a 3 to4 week time to recover. But that's my humble opinion and anyone who knows me knows I'm not too bright. :)
